Purple loosestrife a noxious weed is rapidly making inroads in areas along tha Colorado River. Help is needed to locate and stop spread In other Southeast Utah areas. "River cops" urged to help in locating noxious weed by Janet Lowe River guides, private rafters, kayakers and canoeists can help save Grand Countys wildlife while they work and recreate on area waterways. The Grand County Weed Board is concerned about potential infestations of purple loosestrife, a noxious weed that grows so tall and thick in some wetlands that waterfowl cant land on the water. iOne of our best resources to control this invasive weed is people who spend their time on the river, says Tim Higgs, Grand County Weed Supervisor. "If river guides, river rangers, and other water recreationists will simply keep their eyes peeled, maybe we can lick this thing before it chases off all our waterfowl. n As a office, Higgs points out that he can only cover so many miles of the waterways in our county and points to anyone who spends time on or near rivers, creeks, and other riparian areas as potential weed cops." stalk and then work upwards. Blooming season begins in June and generally concludes around September. For that reason, Higgs points out, river recreationista can play a big role in spotting and eradicating this potentially devastating weed. Each plant may produce between two to three million seeds per year. Purple loosestrife is a perennial herb brought to the U.S. in the early 1800s as a flowering ornamental plant Until 2001 it had not been identified as invading Grand County, but after first encroaching the Colorado River in Colorado, it has slipped its way down the river and into Grand County. I)r. Steven Dewey, extension weed special- ist at Utah State University, reports that an controlling noxious weeds in Grand infestation of purple loosestrife, along with perennial pepperweed, can cause wildlife to abruptly leave an area. They just move out. Wildlife numbers go way down. The weed crowds out plants that are necessary for nesting, food or cover. When the good plants are gone, so is wildlife, he says. Purple loosestrife has already consumed wetlands about 20 miles south of Price destroying what was once perfect habitat for waterfow l. The weed has grown so dense over the water that birds dont even know there is water below. It's a very pretty plant, Higgs says, but it can become so thick that County says Higgs. Once its blooming, purple loosestrife is very noticeable. It can grow up to 8 feet tall and has showy, purple blossoms that grow up the stalk. The plants' purple flowers appear first from the bottom of the County has considerable habitat that purple loosestrife would like including the Colorado River, the Green River, Scott E. Matheson Wetlands Preserve, and spring fed creeks that run through area canyons. one-ma- River guides and frequent river recreationista are the ones who know the river best. They know the access points and they see the river almost daily. They'll notice when things start blooming. I consider the river guides an invaluable resource in a human cant walk through it. Grand cutting doe deer permits, increasing cow elk take DWR proposes For the 2002 season, the Division of Wildlife Resources is proposing a significant decrease in doe deer permits and a big increase in cow moose permits. Cow elk permits would decrease about 15 percent, from 12,500 last year to 10,679 this year. Doe pronghorn permits would increase slightly, from 284 last year to 296 this fall.
