Nephi There was an increase of more then 4,000 visitors to the Little Sahara Sand Dunes this year over the number who spent the Easter holiday there last year. We had 28,000 in just the Dunes recreation area, said Juab County Sheriff David Carter, and last year we had 24,000. But the rest of the county saw a greater number of visitors to recreation sites. In all. Carter said, more than 50,000 people made Juab County the site for their Easter weekend. There were the most campers I have ever seen at the West Desert sites such as Cherry Creek, Desert Mountain, and Topaz Mountain. There were approximately 7,000 people spread out in those areas and camped in between, he said. Nephi Bmes-News Money for water project . . . Heber City Two natural gas generators were delivered to Heber Light and Powers Ray Farrell Power Plant last week. Built by Caterpillar of Lafayette, Ind., the generators cost an estimated $750,000 each and together will generate four megawatts of power for the electric company. The plants manager said the generators replace two diesel generators. HL&P expects cleaner emissions and efficient, power production from the two massive generators. The Wasatch Wave low-co- st Envirocare is a target . . . Tooele A prominent group of Utahns recently launched a ballot initiative aimed at taxing Envirocare of Utah and prohibiting the Tboele County company from accepting certain kinds of wastes. The taxes would benefit children and the homeless, said lobbyist Douglas Foxley, who is pushing the measure on behalf of Utahns for Radioactive Waste Control. The measure may go on the November ballot. The increase would cost Envirocare $200 million a year, which exceeds the companys current annual income, a company spokesman said. American Fork City received its share of that margin set aside from state tax revenues since the 2002 Winter Olympics were announced. The state legislature recently divided up the overage after paying off construction of Olympic venues. American Forks share was $270,000. The money will be used to supplement other funds in remodeling the city hall. sixty-fourt- h American Fork Citizen Rodeo is big business . . . San Juan County, N.M. Northwest New Mexico has seen some big sporting events before namely the Connie Mack World Series but nothing will compare with the mammoth National High School Finals Rodeo which is the worlds largest. About 1,700 contestants and up to 15,000 visitors from the U.S., Canada and Australia are expected to venture to San Juan Countys McGee Park for the July rodeo. The local economic impact, based on past national rodeos, is forecast to be between $10 and $12 million. Four Corners Business Journal 22-2- 8 Telluride may run dry ... Telluride, Colo. While state forecasters sound the alarm on dangerously low snowpack levels that could lead to dry and dangerous conditions this summer, a new report recently updated by Telluride water engineering consultants points to a drought of a different kind. Engineer Scott Fifer told elected officials last week that Tbllurides municipal water supply, under extreme conditions, could fall short by 2006. Despite new projections that scale back Tellurides future water demand by almost 22 percent from 1993 estimates, Fifer said that a new water system trill be needed in the next few years.
