Aaron Willis guest writer On Wednesday, April 10, Utah Senator Dave Steele gave a talk in Moab on the importance of lifelong learning, the recent cuts in education funding, and ways to keep the adult education K-1- 2 session er with adults and students. It's hard not to be dismayed, but if you help the head of the family, you help all. Since adult education is seen as secondary, perception must be altered in order for it to work, he said. It must be seen as necessary, rather than extracurricular. This is especially true for speaking residents of Utah. According to the senator, three to four years ago Park Citys ESL (English as a Second Language) population was S' and last year it topped 24H . The next step is to form cooperative relationships with the community, most notably Work Force Services. Alliances such as these are helpful in generating revenue for lifelong learning, as evidenced n by Brigham Citys dollar grant, Steele said. The biggest trick is selling the notion to those who dont already know. Enthusiasm cant be learned, its taught, Steele said. Winston Churchill gave an inspiring speech to his people during World War II and told them: Never, never, never, never give up. The same applies to lifelong learning. Form partnerships like youve never formed them before. Make friends so they understand. Become classy in reaction to each other. Think and thank. But most of all, never give up. It does make a difference. Those in attendance were HL Weber, Lola McEIhaney, Naya Raines, Julia Bates, Aaron Willis, Nan Norris, Debbie Nelson, Devon Shepherdson, Mike Burgess, diploma in recent years, setting an example for his workforce and customers. The key to making lifelong learning a reality is dedication and persistence. Everyone in a sense is an educator, Steele said, AH it takes is a parent or significant adult to have an impact and your chances of success are increased. It helps the entire community, from kids, family, those in counseling positions, everyone. Utah schools took budget cuts this year, as did other adult services such as vocational rehabilitation. Reflecting upon the past year and how the economy changed, he said, Jobs were lost. Companies changed, so $250 million didnt come in. The incidents of September 11th are also still an economic malady. It was a major blow to Utah, the country, the world. Steele insisted the education cuts were minimal compared with others, and said they were impacted the least on purpose. The senator has been a crusader for learning, proposing several bills for education, the latest being Resolution on Adult Lifelong Learning and Literacy. The resolution recognizes and encourages adults in their efforts to pursue lifelong learning and to promote literacy and expresses support for financial efforts aimed at aiding adults in their quest for literacy. In addition to funding problems, many lifelong learning programs have hardships from lack of participation. Steeles solution is to be with the life- - non-Engli- multi-millio- CORRECTION . . . Whether on a ride or in a workshop, its easier to get things done face to face, especially with the resources IMBA will bnng to the table for the conference. Ashley Korenblat, owner of Western Spirit Cycling in Moab, and a member of IMBAs national board, is thrilled the convention is coming to Moab, as an East Coast state had tried to lure the convention there. Moab needs to maintain its reputation as Ihfi mountain bike destination. said Korenblat. Regarding IMBAs central mission to maintain and build access for cyclists she said IMBA has been a positive force among national land managers due to members commitment to trail work and land preservation. Tim Blumenthal, IMBAs executive director, is excited about the sort of inspiration he expects participants to experience. The last time IMBA held a mjor summit (in Arizona, 1996), we dramatically improved the effectiveness of our organization and work, Blumenthal said. Were confident that the 2002 IMBA Mountain Bike Advocacy Summit will achieve even more for our sport. Local shops and outfitters will be helping out by providing bikes, shuttles and ride leaders few the summit's two group rides, the Slickrock Trail and Top of the World. If the advocates havent found inspiration in their workshops, theyll surely find it in one of those places. Moabs riding should prove inspiring in another way; many of the issues which drive IMBA dont really exist here. Trail closures arent a worry in the area, and the only user conflicts involve cyclists tolerance for motor vehicles. Hikers and equestrian users arent trying to restrict cyclists. These things Moab riders take for granted arent the norm for IMBAs 32,000 members. If mountain bikers everywhere enjoyed the freedom of riding Grand Countys thousands of miles of backcountry roads, there wouldnt be as much need for IMBA. However, with factors like suburban sprawl putting pressure on trails in areas, cyclists need representation to maind clubs have been instrutain their riding privileges. mental in helping provide and maintain sustainable trails while minimizing user conflicts. This has meant more riding opportunities, which means more riders. It has also meant a higher standard for trail construction and maintenance, as evidenced by Moabs neighbors to the east, Fruita and Durango. IMBA clubs in those places have created such impressive trail networks that Grand Countys trail committee. Within moments of reports of smoke pouring from the swamp cooler, firefighters responded. The fire did not have time to travel to the attic or other areas of the home before firefighters brought it under control. The neighboring duplex, which was occupied by Rosemary Yama at the time of the fire, suffered only minor smoke damage. No one was Your Personal Oasis injured. The residents of the duplex, Nicole and Levi Whitney had just moved into the home 10 days ago, but were not at home at the time the fire started. The obviously shaken couple stood by while firefighters investigated the cause of the blaze. Duplex owners, Dave and Kim Pettit, consoled their tenants and offered assistance in moving personal belongs or relocating while repairs are made. Luxury Townhome Condominiums from $224,000.
