The project has four main goals. The first is to expand access to the cultural heritage of five regional museums and three university libraries by creating a virtual museum. The second is to establish a collaborative environment where a consortium of institutions can work together, sharing materials and expertise to create online exhibits. The third provides for establishing and sharing innovative models for distributing audio artifacts in virtual museums and integrating a variety of museumarchive artifacts in various formats. The fourth provides educational and enriching exhibits on the popular Colorado Plateau region to a world wide audience. Other partners involved in Voices of the Colorado Plateau" include Julia Betz of the John Wesley Powell Museum, Rachel Tumbaugh of Iron Mission State Park, Linda Thatcher of Utah State Historical Society, Michael O'Hara of the Museum of Northern Arizona, Earl Mulderink, associate professor of history, Janet Seegmiller of Southern Utah University Special Collections, Karen Underhill of the Northern Arizona University Library, and Matt Nickerson of SUU. The next meeting is scheduled for April 27 in Cedar City. The partners plan to put together a powerful multimedia web presentation that can be accessed by home computer users. They hope to use oral histories and photographs related to the Colorado Plateau region in order to make the site personal. A team from SUU will perform the work. The oral history tapes housed at Edge of the Cedars are expected to play a key role. Suggested themes to be explored through the virtual museum include resources, archaeology, people, discovery and exploration, education, culture and exploitation. In- formation about Native American tribes such as the Hopi, Navajo, Paiute, Ute, Ancestral Puebloans, Walapai and Havasu will be included. Edge of the Cedars is known for its large collection of prehistoric Puebloan pottery; Chacoan style ruin, outstanding changing exhibits, and Sun Marker sculpture. The Landscape Remembers: Reverse Archaeology in Canyon Country is on display through May. The museum is located at 660 West 400 North in Blanding. Unique and educational gifts are available in the museum store. Winter hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, or to volunteer, contact the museum at daily, including Sundays. |
