CFI will begin its season of educational programs in April, running through October. VanderZanden said most of the classes science and geology programs - are attended by young people from the Wasatch Front and all over the country. Many come from private schools, most particularly Waldorf Schools, however VanderZandei said she tries to work with public schools on the Wasatch Front to offer programs to students there. Tran.'portaUon is a tug problem, she said. Especially the funding In Grand County eighth-grader- s participate in a three-daprogram funded by the county VanderZanden said she hopes other school districts and counties around the state will find similar funding for their students. In addition to the student programs, CFI offers internships and graduate programs for young teachers, hiking, rafting and horse ED Ventures, custom and group land and raft tours, elderhostel trips for those 55 years and up and a writers workshop. For more information about any of these programs contact the Moab office at h. i tasks' the many ducks (200 isnt uncommon, Bates said) this years group had seen, the eagle appeared to sail. During another sighting a flock of smaller birds flew below the mighty eagle; it was as if the eagle was the Lion King of the sky. The second bird marked on a tally sheet carried in each boat was a common flicker. This bird was heard rather than seen, and at the time conversation was minimal and the morning song of many birds set a tone (no pun intended) of quiet excitement and anticipation. There are more water fowl if it has been a colder, snowier winter, VanderZanden said. If it has been a mild winter a lot of the eagles are often gone by the first week of March. CFIs records show that the fewest number of eagles sighted on the Eagle Float was six, and the greatest number 50. Last weekends group spotted 14; eight Bald Eagles and six Golden. According to Bates, Bald Eagles prefer to feed on fish, and sometimes even duck and geese. Golden Eagles are more associated with small game habitat. We actually found a fawn in an eagles nest once, he said. One of the nests sighted on the float was approximately seven feet in diameter. Eagles will build upon the same nest year after year, expanding with the size of a family. Soon began to meld with boating, and shouts of shallow, shallow, pull the motor bird-watchi- competed with shouts of 12 oclock, in the mist, the location of an eagle. The rowers on this trio of boats was Arlo Tejada, VanderZanden and Kara Fanning, a power rower guide with CFI whose sense of humor added to the fun. They worked together as two boats were tied together in front and a third latched on behind. . Jose Tejada (Arlos father) was the master guide operating (and at one point, repairing) the motor. This trip had two such trios. Someone thought they heard a raven, to which another voice said, Thats the John Bird. John has quite a raven call, VanderZanden said. RATTLESNAKE AND BLACK ROCK CANYONS Arlo tells us that Rattlesnake Canyon is said to have the most arches per mile when compared to Arches National Park. They are not visible from the river. Morning has given way to midday and there is a lull. VanderZanden spots a couple of boats and notes it is unusual to see anyone else on the river at this time of year. There are conversations about road trips, hiking, horseback riding; this is a fun group of people to share a day with. Quite inspiring to go out and have fun. Black Rock Canyon is a stretch of river aptly named for its immense black rocks. They almost look out of place against a red rock backdrop. It feels prehistoric. Someone notes these rocks are 1.5 billion years old -the foundation, they say, of this part of the country. This is where the group will have lunch shortly. Yeah! Many shouts. Another eagle is spotted just as mild disappointment was beginning to set in. It was a Golden, about four or five years old. Then a debate: Was it an old Golden or a young Bald? It was to be the closest view of an eagle we would get this day. Hes showing off for us and we still cant tell for sure," VanderZanden said as he soared over us for many minutes. The eagle has been taken off of the Endangered Species list because of its successful comeback. Fagan said the numbers -which vary from one area to another increased dramatically between 1982 and 1998. One example cited was from 57 to 212. The final eagle count was eight Bald and six Golden - for a grand total of 14 sighted. SANDHILL CRANE AND A RAINBOW The last 30 to 45 minutes of the float were dramatic: Dark storm clouds appeared over the Ranger Station at the Westwater takeout and the air took on a bit- ing chill.
