Show Inside: Arcfts spring schedule GCAN maivtss Moat and the wa.ts O'j-npi- Thursday, March 8, 2001 to Gunnison loss miserable with season end Hoopsters CASTLE DALE - The season came to a grinding halt for the Red Devils, and that bothered Coach Ryan Neilson - but not as much as how it ended. When the ref blew his w hustle I was really hoping he was going to say the clock had run out," said Nielson of a last second play at the end of the Devils game Friday against Gunnison. The ref said there was no foul. Now that bothered me." Leading up to the final seconds of play was a game that went back and forth for nearly four quarters of play It w as one of the most fun games to watch and be a part of that I have ever seen or been around," said Nielson. The kids played w ell for nearly the entire game on both sides. The fan support was great. It was an awesome experience, until the last few seconds of play." And the call. With less than a second on the clock GO IS had the ball and one shot to take the lead in the effort by senior game. A F rench was let loose Matt guard line. from beyond the It may or may not have gone in to give the Devils the win, but no one w ill ever know. When the Gunnison kid hit Matts arm I couldnt believe it," All they said Nielson. (Gunnison) had to do was not foul us and put the pressure on us to -- last-ditc- h half-cou- rt shoot a wild shot and miss. Fouling us would put someone on the line and give us a chance." As the shot sailed wide, and no whistle sounded, the teams emptied the benches. Gunnison reveling in the win. Grand stunned and arguing their per- spective. I didn't want the season to end that way," said Nielson. We didnt lo&e the game on that shot, but it left the season with a foul taste." What cost the Devils the game were rebounds - Gunnison had ten points off offensive rebounds in the game, and missed free throws by Grand down the stretch. We made nearly all our attempts in the first three quarters of play," said Nielson. We missed nearly all our attempts in the last quarter of play. Losing the rebounds and missing those shots were the difference in the game." Grand loses three players to graduation and next year returns several players that have had plenty of playing time. Gaining playoff experience in Cedar City at the next round of state play will have to wait, though. I really wanted the kids to a get feel for what the next level of playoff play is like," said Nielson. That will have to wait until next year. And hopefully there will be no more questionable calls at that time. Let the Games Begin! by Kari Gibb Times-Independe- sports editor at We're Duke, this is a championship program... This game was more about heart and desire and a will to win. We knew we were outsized, we knew we were going against the world, but we had a bigger heart, a bigger will to come out and quiet all the critics. Chris Duhon Duke Freshman on win over North Carolina One play in one game this last weekend sums up what feel about March sports. In the second half of play during Sunday's key matchup between Duke and North Carolina, a tight game was swayed with one effort by senior swing man Shane BatI tier. Duke came into the game without their inside threat. The big man Carlos Boozer was out with an injury for the Devils and North Caroline had beaten Duke in their first meeting. Both teams were undefeated in ACC play and all the Tar Heels had to do was win the game to move past Duke in the polls and claim the ACC title for this year. Undersized in the paint, Duke was picked to lose this game despite having a higher ranking (2nd in the nation compared to North Carolinas d back and forth 4th ranking). A two-poigame at the half that became all Duke after one play by Battier changed everything. Keeping things close, the Tar Heels had just pulled down a rebound and started a fast break. Streaking for the basket, a North Carolina player looked like he had a sure basket - nice move too - with a touch shot off the glass to bank in the easy lay-uStreaking down the court, Battier caught the Tar Heel player from behind. He went up and not only blocked the shot, but he blocked it and sent the ball flying back up the court to one of his own Duke buddies. nt see-sawe- p.
