It is no longer news that quaint little towns across the rural west are undergoing wrenching expansion. But Gateway, Colo, appears to be at the threshold of what can only be called a growth explosion. The small Colorado community near the Utah border sits nestled in the junction of two deep canyons, surrounded on all sides by towering sandstone cliffs and miles of rugged wilderness that stretch beyond in every direction. Isolated from the world by the La Sal Mountains to the west and the Uncompahgre Plateau to the east, the tiny Dolores River hamlet has largely escaped the development pressures experienced by many small towns in the mountain west. But all that is about to CEO John Hendricks. Last year he purchased thousands of ares there pretty much the entire town. Hendricks and his developer, John Bratton, have since announced plans to build a plush resort community so vast it will likely dwarf the old Gateway. Associated in Utah with the law fimicf tor e Church girls participate in service project to make clothing for youth in foreign countries Pri- mary Valiant girls have been learning and practicing acts of service in their classes. The girls have mostly done several acts of service, including tying a baby quilt to donate to a quilt drive, making and taking cookies to people in the Ward and helping each other, and their friends. But they wanted to do something that really made a difference, and wished to do something for other girls like themselves, especially ones their own age. The publication of the LDS guidelines gave them the needed clue. In many countries, tradition insists that girls only wear before, got to work. The plan was to send at least 36 dresses to the LDS Humanitarian drive. So far, the girls have finished a total of 20 dresses, and are waiting to obtain some more knit shirts. Since some of these dresses will have to be washed in rivers and streams the colors chosen were rich, darker shades of blues, roses, violets etc. No whites or pastels were used. There was a real need for play dresses for girls from tots to early teens. The girls had a discussion with their teacher Mary Black, and activity specialist Jacquelyn Adams. How would it feel to be in need of a dress or two? What would it be like to receive a special dress made especially for them? How it would feel to be able to help such a girl? Once the project was decided, mothers and others in the Ward helped by furnishing fabric for some of the dresses, and a few of the shirts. Memory Lane Thrift Store sold the knit shirts the girls chose to use, Marion Holyoak at the Grand County Extension office furnished room, sewing machines and aid. Jacquelyn Adams provided help, support and a sense of humor to the girls, and this ambitious group, many who had not used a sewing machine Dont Go Out of Town fur Printing Scrrit c Wkrn You Cn Hare Tktm Pont t( Hie Times-Independe- nt More efficiently and More affordably, irith quality guaranteed!
