In so doing, we will ask some important questions that CAN and WILL affect your present and your future. As always, please take time to read each Scripture reference and answer the questions PRAYERFULLY, CAREFULLY, and with "an honest and good HEART (Luke 8.15). 27. (Cont) HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT OPERATE ON THE MINDS AND HEARTS OF MEN TODAY FOR THEIR SALVATION? In our last article we learned that everything that is necessary to conversion and to living the Christian life is repre-sente- d in the Bible as being accomplished by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. Today, we will continue to look 41 examples of these truths. (4) People need to be purified. But how is it done? The Bible says, Seeing ye have the truth through your souls in the Spirit ... "(I Pet. 1:22). Thus, purification comes by obedience to the Word. Jesus mid the said, "And ye shall know the shall make you free (John 8.32). One MUST obey the TRUTH (the Gospel) to be made free from sin. (5) The sinner needs to be quickened or made alive (Eph. 2: 1 ). But how is it done? The Psalmist wrote. "This is my comfort in me my affliction: for thy word hath (Ps. 119:50). "I will never forget thy preme" (v. cepts: for with them thou hast 93). The Words of the Spirit give life; for Jesus said, "h is the spirit that ; the flesh profiteth nothing site that I speak " unto you, they aie spirit, and they are (John 6.63). The conversion of those os the day of Pentecost shows how people are "quickened," or spiritually made alive. Luke says that after fhe people had heard Peter's sermon they were in their heart" (Acts 2:37). On that day hearts were pierced, thousand people were convicted, and turned to the Lord and were baptized (v. 4 ). The Gospel was the POWER which converted these individuals, the Spirit influenced them by His Words. Since the Word of God is "the of the Spirit" (Eph 6.17). it was i he Word preached by the Spirit through the apostles that -- pricked these penpie tit then- hearts. The Spirit did the work hat NOT in a DIRECT manner. This one example plainly shows HOW ihe Holy Spirit operates upon tinners in con verst; However, the same is true in EVERY example of conversion in she book of Acts The Word of God God's power "umo "(Rom. 1.16) was always taught. By hearing, believing, and obeying the Gospel, as those did on the day of Pentecost, people were converted, or bom again; bom of and of the Spirit" (John 3.5). The Gospel is the INSTRUMENT which the Holy Sprit always uses in His work of conversion in quickening the soul. When an act is said to have been done by a person and by a certain instrument, it is clearly understood that the person performed the act, but used his instrument as a means. What saves our sou is? James says the " our engrafted Word of God is able to souls (James 1.21; tf.Acts 11:14). The false theory of a Direct Operation of the Spirit destroys man's moral freedom, makes salvation wholly unconditional, and charges God as being a respecter o) persons. If the Spirit operates DIRECTLY ou sinners, why are not all sinners saved? If God sends a direct irresistible operation of the Holy Spirit to one person, He must send it to all. or show respect of persons. Yet. the Bible says thai God is no of persons" (Acts 0:34-3- 5 jr (6) In addition, after one becomes a Christian, he needs GUIDANCE in living the Christian life. But how does that guidance come? Thy is a lamp unto my . and a light ur.ic my (Ps. 119:105). "The entrance of thy giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple (v. 1 30). Thus. Gods Word furnishes guidance, not a DIRECT operation of the Spirit. . Conclusion: All that we know about how ' to become a Christian and live the Christian life is set out in the New Testament In these brief 27 books we learn that the Holy Spirit strengthens (Eph. 3:16). sanctifies (2 Thess. 2:13). saves (Tit. 3:5). justifies (I Tim. 3:16). witnesses tc us (Htb. 10.15). prompts us to love God (Rom. 5:5). leads us as God's sons (Rom. 816). and will eventually raise us from the dead ('Rom. 8 II). He does all these things and more by means of the Word of truth (Eph. 1.13). His instrument. Piease SEARCH THE ABOVE SCRIPTURES and see whether these things are so (Acts 1 7; 1 1).
