Bob Bennett joined in introducing legislation to allow oil and gas exploration in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a move Bennett says will reduce Americas dependence on foreign oil and consumers costs at the pump For too long weve relied too heavily on other countries to meet our energy needs here at home,' said Bennett. As a result, our heating bills are higher and our gas tanks cost more to fill. This can change, and a good first step is to move forward with the safe, environmentally responsible development proposed in this bill. Our failure to act now could mean more than an expensive crosscountry drive this summer Authored by Sen. Frank Murkowski chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Re (R-A- sources Committee and by Bennett, the bill would open ANWR for environmentally responsible oil and gas exploration. Geologists agree that ANWR includes the nation's best prospects for major new onshore oil discoveries In 1987, as part of an environmental impact statement, the Department of Interior recommended Congress open Alaska's coastal plain for oil and gas exploration. In 1995, the U.S. House and Senate passed legislation approving development of the area but the measure was vetoed by President Clinton. Since then, government estimates ofthe recoverable supply of oil contained in the coastal plain have doubled, bringing the total between nine and 16 billion barrels of oi' That's more, Bennett noted, than what the U.S. imports from Saudi BLM seeking nominations for statewide advisory council Nominations are being sought by the Bureau of Land Management for its statewide Resource Advisory Council. Work at the 50 Utah vendor currently doing business in Alaska oil fields would dramatically increase As part of the new legislation, ANWR would be opened using Arabia over a period. Each year, U.S. dependence on foreign oil creeps alarmingly higher, Bennett added. Today we rely on other countries for 55 percent of our oil needs, and by the year 2020 experts predict that number will rise to 64 percent.
