Show THE SALT, LAKE TRIBUNE, Firestone Says Tire Company Believes SatManager Scales Should Be Consultisfied Employees Are Valed Before Replacing Tire. uable Asset' to Concern. SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 27, 1920. 1 "Consult the scales before you buy that new set of tires for your passenger car," advises W. L. Sewell, Firestone branch manager, 170 West Second South street. He points to recent action by the society of Automobile Engineers In revising maximum carrying weights for tires of various sizes and says that. In his opinion, the tire buyer will save money and trouble by being sure his tires are not undersized. Here Is the proper, method of determining the weight each tire should bear, according to Mr. Sewell: "Run the front half of the car on the platform scales, then the rear half The, weight earned by tach tire will be lialf the respective amounts registered. "The approach to the scales should bo level and, if reasonable care Is exercised, the total of the two operations will be within twenty or thirty pounds of the weight of the car when all of it is upon the scales." The following table shows the maximum weight permissible on each tire and the various pressures, as recommended who representative, by the Firestone uses the table compiled by the Society of Automobile Engineers as a basis for THE TRUTH THAT' EMBODIES - ALL - TRUTH -- Many motorists do not realize that their tires are the concrete result of the com blned efforts of many skilled and painstaking workmen men who are trained specialists in this particular branch of Industrial art, and who must be as precise and careful In the performance of their duties as the watchmaker or the diamond cutter. So much In the way of tire quality and endurance depends upon the experience, .skill and vigilance of the tire builder that many manufacturers have found the problem 'of maintaining the highest morale among their workers a difficult one to handle. The satisfied, as well as satis like ths pleased cusfactory, tomer, is an Invaluable asset. no Perhaps single Innovation has proved more successful In Its adoption than the bonus and premium plan of remunerating workmen for their services, as applied by the pioneer western rubber factory at San Diego, where the House of Spreckels produces Savage tire. This svstem provides a premium for workmen making a required number of polnta, contingent upon the work performed, which must meet with strict requirements and come up to the high standard set and maintained. A bonus and premium Is given for good workmanship, while a penalty Is Imposed for negligence The benefits of this plan accrue to all Rv this means the workmen concerned are. vitally interested In turning out only such produ-t- s as are worthy of the name of Fpreckela "Savage." the invariable high quality of these products Is assured, and the ultimate consumer reaps this benefit In the kind of service that Imparts onfldence The Flogan of the Spreckels Savage Tire is a terse company. "Built to Excel, statement of fact, and implies the result of .savage methods. The watchword of the workmen, "Aim to Excel." Is Indicative of the spirit displayed, and the loyal service rendered by each and every worker because of his natural pride in making a product of merit, and because It Is to his personal Interest to execute at all times with the greatest possible skill. Here wo have a policy that meets satisfactorily 'he requirements of both individual Justice and Industrial progress People are still going about with their eyes eagerly alight, hunting for the honest man and the honest product substantial, goes on, just as before, without . interruption. That which is unworthy carries its own punishment, and its own penalty its true character is inevitably disclosed in due time, even though a temporary prosperity comes it from the caprice of the unthinking. When the tumult and the shouting dies down, the strong man, the strong institution, the true artist, and the true weak" man, in any and every vocation, is more solidly entrenched than ever. , When that search is rewarded, nothing but betrayal can break or lessen their allegiance. It has been pathetically true from th6 begin-ninof time, that men admire honor in others even when they have smirched it g in themselves. Humanity may be a , million years old in point of time, but it is as young as this mornings sun in its pursuit of the ideal After two thousand years of disappointment and disillusion, the eternal verities and the eternal values still prevail. c Even though it be surrounded, and seemingly obscured by sham and pretense, nothing in this world is discovered so surely as solid merit The elemental truths are still true; the man whose word is good is still the secret hero of our inmost hearts. We smile, perhaps, at the Nothing stands out so strikingly, by way of contrast as genuineness ana genius. Even in an era of unbridled extravagance, when, on the surface, men appear to have lost all sense of proportion, that which is sound, and good, and true, is more admired, and more desired, than ever. Although rubber works in Akron are making tires .it the clip of one a second, they find time to keep their city in the foremost ranks of American industrial cities fostering amateur athletics.
