Few deer were lost this past winter, so most of the male deer bom in spring 2003 will be available as spike and bucks this year. While deer herds in the northern part of Utah are doing better, deer in the southern parts of both the Southern and Southeastern regions continue to struggle because of drought. As a result, buck to doe ratios are almost identical across the state. All ofthe five regions are about the same as far as buck to doe ratios, with an average of 15 to 16 bucks per 100 does across Utah, he Utahs general statewide archery buck deer hunt begins Aug. 21. Hunters may hunt on any area in the state thats open to general season deer hunting. As of Aug. 3, more than 6,000 permits were still available for the hunt. The northern half of Utah received some good rainfall during the spring of 2003, and that helped the number of fawns born that spring rebound after four years of decline, said Jim Karpowitz, big two-poi- said. aisq 10 Karpowitz says archery hunters who have gotten used to hunting in dry conditions the past few years may need to switch tactics this season. This wet summer has provided a lot of vegetation and water sources for the deer, and thats spread them out. Archery hunters who are used to hunting water sources will need to get out and find the deer this season, he said. The wet conditions have also improved hunting conditions, however, and it will be easier for hunters to move around without spooking the deer. Karpowitz encourages archery hunters to review a copy of the 2004 Big Game Proclamation and to learn where they can ride their vehicles by obtaining OHV riding maps from the U.S. Forest Service or Bureau of Land TERNATIONAL s coming o Moab! Karpowitz says the general statewide archery hunt provides hunters advantages they wont find in any other hunt. Statewide archery hunters enjoy a long season and theyre able to hunt dur- ing a nice time of year, when the weather is usually good, he said. The archery hunt isnt as crowded as the rifle and muzzleloader hunts and archery hunters get first crack at the deer, so theyre hunting when deer numbers are the highest. Hunters who havent purchased their permit yet may obtain one at the DWRs Web site (wildlife.utah.gov). Permits also are available from 150 license agents statewide and the DWRs six offices. In the Southeastern Region, Bill Bates, Southeastern Region wildlife manager, says deer hunting will be a mixed bag in 2004. ratios are Buck-do- e pretty close to the management objective of 15 bucks per 100 does, Bates said. The Manti unit is slightly higher at 17 bucks per 100 does. The La Sal and Abajo mountains stand at 13 bucks per 100 does. Li the deer remains at about population Region-wid- i iI 'i &' ' i I S' e, 56 percent of herd objective. The Book Cliffs have the most room for growth, with herds at 25 percent of objective. The Manti, at 75 percent, takes the lead deer herd recovery. Other units fall in at about 50 percent. Fawn to doe ratios increased this year and averaged 54 fawns per 100 does, Bates said. This number is up significantly from previous years, but still has a long way to go. Doe to fawn ratios higher than 70 fawns per 100 does are desirable for the population to recover. Bates says archery hunters can expect to see a lot of yearling bucks this year. This past winter caused very little winterkill because periods of moisture were broken by periods of melting, making forage available to the deer, he Moab said. Alex Esquibel, Andrea Lopez, and Rachel Bates urges hunters to do some scouting. Find water sources in sheltered locations and away from roads, he said. Locate day beds, foraging areas and escape routes. Realize that the behavior patterns of deer may change dramatically with increased hunter traffic. pre-seaso- rt u n " I All-Star- W &JS 4 I JF ... s Saggboy participated in their last softball game at Salt Lake City complex in June. There is a lot of good left in SE Utah fishingreport The fishing for Southeastern Utah was released this week. Late sum- mer and early fall fishing provides some of the best fishing of the year. Following is the rundown: LA SAL MOUNTAINS Dedicated hunter Travis Clark checked La Sal Mountain lakes last weekend and provided the following report: Medicine Lake fishing was fair. Some trout were being caught on green PowerBait and a bubble, orange PowerBait and sinker as well as a worm under a bubble. Oowah-Fishin- g has been excellent. Lots of fish were be- mer and fall due to the efforts of NPS. )) Stripers are still boiling at many mid lake locations. Most boils were very quick and stripers had gone deep before anglers could react. There were enough boils reported this past week to delight those that were in the right place. Most striper caught in boils weighed two to five pounds. Larger stripers have gone deep as the water surface temperature increased and the warm water band got wider. ABAJO MOUNTAINS Conservation Officer Randall Scheetz reports that fishing conditions remain the same as those reported a week earlier. Last weeks report follows: Fishing has been good at Foy d Reservoir with com or Zekes, floating off the bottom. Fishing conditions at Monticello Reservoir have ranged from good to excellent early and late with jigs and Daredevil spinners. At midday, Zekes garlic bait or salmon eggs seems to work worm-flavore- best. Blanding 3 and Blanding 4 reservoirs offer good to excellent fishing respectively. Zekes garlic and salmon eggs have been the most effective at 3, while white marshmallows or Zekes chartreuse cheese bait has worked best at Blending 4, NOW ONLY fish-gette- rs LAKE POWELL- - Wayne Gustaveson, Emma Welling Piano Performance During my junior and senior years at Grand County High School I took 30 credits worth of concurrent enrollment classes. DWR Lake Powell project leader, provides the following report: The lake elevation is 3,579 M.S.L. and the water temperature is 77 - 83 F. Expect perhaps the best striper boils of the year to happen by mid August in the middle portion of Lake Powell centered at BullfrogHalls but reaching to the San Juan and Good Hope Bay. Launching access is acceptable as NPS makes daily efforts to fill in pot holes, build new roads and ramps, and make it easier for all to launch on dirt ramps under low water conditions.
