Show Page B6 Hlhe tEtmcg-3igpgnbn- Questar celebrates 75 On Aug. 17, 1929 next Tuesday years ago about 15,000 people showed up for a street party on Salt Lake Citys east bench. It was raining, but that didnt seem to matter. The cause for the celebration? Well, for the previous eight months theyd been reading about the exploits of pipeline-constructio- crews in n the mountains east of town as they battled the elements in a race against the calendar. And it was time to see what all the fuss was about. In a scene that anticipated the ceremony at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games a few miles and decades away, the crowd watched in awe as officials ignited a huge flare at the end of a pipe. With a hissing roar that torch-lightin- g 75-fo- ot temporarily deafened the crowds surrounding the site, the gas surged into the air and, catching the flame, boomed forth its challenge to the efficiency of the human mind which had imprisoned and shackled it to the needs of mankind," gushed one newspaper reporter. Today we know the gas as natural gas. And its just about as common and taken in Utah homes for granted as running water. But its arrival in Salt Lake City in August 1929 was front-pag- e news. In the words of another reporter, the completion of the pipeline was a construction task that has no Western parallel. It took about 3,000 men to e pipeline complete the system between the Wasatch Front and the gas fields of southwestern Wyoming and northwestern Colorado. Crews talked about shoveling five feet of snow off the pipeline in Emigration y 330-mil- right-of-wa- Canyon at the start of construction in January and using dynamite to break up the frozen ground. They described spring mud so deep that trucks had to be rescued by bulldozers or teams of horses. tech- n Pipeline-constructio- niques were still in their fancy, and it showed. There were almost as many people at that Aug. 17 celebration as there were customers on the system that winter. Ih those days, natural gas cost more than many other fuels. It took another decade before it began to win over large numbers of customers, thanks to its convenience, cleanliness, and improving economics. And it took until 2001 for natural gas from Questar arrived in Moab and Monticello, though the communities had been served for many years by Utah Gas Ser- vice Company.
