The gathering celebrated land preservation efforts by organizations and individuals that have, according to Bill Hedden, executive director of the Grand Canyon Trust, protected thousands of acres of land from commercial development over the past five years. Hedden recognized two groups - The Nature Conservancy of Utah and Utah Open Lands - for their conservation efforts that encompass more than 4,000 acres of land near the small community of Castle Valley and along the Colorado River corridor. But Hedden noted that 16 conservation and environmental groups active in Grand County were represented at the event. Its gratifying to look around this room and see all these people who contribute to wanted to celebrate all the these accomplishments. Hedden paid tribute to Jennifer Speers, a Salt Lake City woman who has purchased more than 500 acres of land, including farmland and a failed commercial development in Grand County to preserve it as open space. Moab Mayor Dave Sakrison presented Speers with a key to the territory in appreciation for her conservation efforts.
