If you were there at the invitational, you drew Jones, and Daniel Johnson helped finish the top five runners for Grand. Will, will agree they definitely made their statement. With weather improving as race time approached, the Red Devils Mens JV team took to the race course. Not only did runners improve on their respective previous best, but also they clustered effectively. Though no JV runner was in the top three finishers, the first 5 Red Devil runners were in the top 10. This type of grouping or clustering can be an effective tool to get an Andrew, as Coach Bernie Cross-Countr- y edge on your competition. In th is case, Moab runners outscored Green River by 3 points. Moab 28, Green River low 31. In score wins. Cross-Countr- y, Calvin Denny led the Mens JV with an impressive 21:41.17 fourth place finish on a very tough race course. Right on Calvin's heels was Paul Allen who turned in his career best of 21:51.89 and a fifth who also plays football, completed the race with a seventh place showing. Andrew Jones, the only freshman on the team, demonstrated his potential by finishing just behind Will. Watch this young man, Radcliffe says, As soon as he establishes his base and gathers experience, Andrew will be a runner people will remember. Daniel Johnson helped seal the victory with his tenth place finish and a new personal best. In you score with your first five runners, but your remaining runners play just as valuable role as the first five. They can help give your team distance in the scoring by pushing the other runners scores dow n by finishing ahead of their opponents. Brennan Cozzens, cross-countr- Aaron y, Montague, Chris Groesbeck, and Chad Sewell did exactly that. Their respective finishes helped Moab take the first race of the day. Due to various reasons, the coaches agreed to run the Womens Varsity and Junior Varsity together. Though Moab had the only full junior varsity team that does not diminish their efforts because they still had to run the race and finish. Sarah Tangren, April Martin, Randi Fosse, Kelly Sowell, and Amanda Carngan combined efforts to successfully traverse the "tough" Moab course. Paula Radcliffe is Amandas sighted guide this year. She has to also run the same course that everyone else runs. The Lady Red Devil runners were now in the spotlight and they rose to the occasion magnificently Leading for about half the race, Shelly Welch missed breaking the school record by less than 1.5 seconds. But her second place finish was a prelude of things to come Lora Lee finished in third place giving Moab an edge in the scoring. Faye Bylilly was not to be outdone. She came in with a very var-sit- y strong fifth place showing Natasha Diehl brought in her personal best for this course to hold Moabs lead. Emily Bishoff, first-yea- r cross-countr- y runner, finished 16th and Natalee Stucki helped close the door on other teams with her 17th pi ice finish. Coach Radcliffe stated that this was a good showing for the ladies the 2nd annual Squishy Woman Triathlon. As the name suggests, it is an event designed to accommodate the athletic abilities of the average peion and not just the super athlete. The event consisted in a swim, a seven-mil- e bike ride and a three-milrun. For the last couple of months, the five women could be seen riding and running the streets of Moab as well as being frequent visitors to the City Pool during lap swimming. The event was very successful and each of the participants exceeded their expecta- half-mil-e e tions. The Triathlon was started last year as part of a fundraiser for the Share A Smile foundation; a group of Utah dentists that donate their time and services to needy children. Last year they traveled to Bolivia and provided $60,000 worth of dental care to needy Bolivians. They will be going to Russia in October of this year. The mission statement of the foundation is as follow's. Members of Share a Smile are committed to providing dental care and education to the less fortunate.
