Paquito D'Rivera and Friends will perform Saturday, September 13, 7:00 p.m. Michelle Wurth and Eric Trenbeath at the Grand County High School Auditorium. Framed Image opens its doors in Moab Church contributing writer by Lisa After years of chasing seasonal work with ski resorts and river companies, Eric Trenbeath is settling down The former avalanche forecaster for the Manti La Sal Mountains has transformed himself into a businessman, and the change', he says, is welcome realized that I can't work outdoors forever, so I started seriously thinking about what I was going to do wit t hi' rest of m life," I 1 Trenbeath says This sounded good to me This is Framed Image -an art framing and graphic design company Two weeks ago, Trenbeath and his wife and partner Michelle Wurth opened Framed Image, an art framing and graphic design shop tucked away in an alley storefront at 59 Fast Center, Suite B, just off Center Street and Main The pair's choice of businesses may cause some head scratching among those who recognize1 his name and are acquainted with their at traction to outdoor employment - wouldnt a gear shop, or an outfitting business make more sense after all - but for gvy D'Riveras music is a blend of original compositions by Paquito, Latin classical and Trenbeath, it's actually a way of reclaiming a part of his life that's been on the back burner all these years I realized that I can't work outdoors forever, so I started seriously thinking about what few people realize is how much actually has to go into it. A good framing job, you should hardly notice. It shouldnt detract from the art. Instead, it should bring your eye in and help you see the art more clearly. Wurth and Trenbeath also hope to w'ork with Moabs burgeoning artist community to help develop Center Street as an arts center A lot of artists want to live here, but theyve found that to do so they have to export their work to galleries in other places, Wurth said. We want them to be able to exhibit their work in Moab too And was going to do rest of my life, I with the Trenbeath says. A framing shop seemed like a good idea for me He is, after all, an artist. In fact, Trenbeath has a university degree in graphic design and illustration, and has worked, in one former incarnation, as an advertising artist and designer. But he's not hoping to pick up where he left off as a graphic artist: Trenbeath says he designs logos and the occasional brochure, hut for the moment, at least, hes not planning to take on more complicated design projects For now, he's immersing himself in the framing work. He attended a framing school in Colorado this spring and plans to focus most of his energy on refining his framing skills. We try to do it all shadow boxes, tine art conser-vatiotechniques, and of these shops along Center Street could be a perfect setting. It could become the art center of town." And w hilt Framed Image is not a gallery, Trenbeath and Wurth will exhibit art in the shop each month during the Moab Art Walk. On Saturday Sept. 13, Trenbeath's own paintings will be on display Art has always occupied a real corner of me, but I havent always focused on it," Trenbeath says. 1 hope, for all the artists here, that it can become, a viable economy in n course the standard frame jobs," Trenbeath says. D'Rivera was bom in Havana, Cuba, a child prodigy who was playing the clarinet and saxophone and performing with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra at a very tender age. In 1981, DRivera sought asylum in the United States and has been making music ever since. He sees his role as a sort of cross cultural ambassador, creating and promoting a multinational style that moves from Bebop to Latin to Mozart. He was a guest artist at the White House on June 2, 1999, and performed at the Kennedy Center as featured guest artist in the historical Americanos concert broadcast nationwide by PBS. In the year 2000, Jazz at Lincoln Center commissioned Paquito to write a piece for their As of Now series which premiered, recorded and broadcast on National Public Radio. The groups flute player, Nestor Torres, is also a winner and nominee. Most recently he scored his third Latin Grammy nomination with his album Mi Alma Latina (My Latin Soul), which was nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Album. til n Hank' Its a sec me place to glow your money lot mloi mote malion, c all me todav And talk w tlh someone ) on S Submit it to The boundaries of classical music.
