Sisters Ashtyn (left) and Bailey Hammer took Stars photo contests by storm two years in a row This year Bailey was the winner of the contest for the Stars Regional program as well as for the cover of the Stars National Magazine Last year, sister Ashtyn won the cover contest for the the Stars Nationals program Dont drink and drive this holiday weekend While the long July 4th weekend is traditionally a time for travel and relaxation, it also is one of the deadliest periods of the year for alcohol-relate- d highway deaths To protect those who are traveling this holiday the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA is coordinating a nationwide enforcement crackdown from June 27 to July 13 As part of the You Drink & Drive You Lose campaign, local and state officials throughout the region will be out in force conducting sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols in most states Their mission is clear Arrest and prosecute those who drive impaired The regional enforcement effort will be supplemented by an $11 million national ad campaign which targets men - the demographic year-ol- d to most likely drive while impaired 21-3- 4 Spots will be produced in English and Spanish Violators will be spending money on bail, court, legal fees and towing charges instead of spending it on a summer vacation, said NHTSA Regional Administrator Lou DeCarolis Ph D After years of gradual improvement fatalities in alcohol-relatecrashes have increased over the past three years NHTSA estimates that in 2002 17 970 people were killed in alcohol related crashes representing approximately 42 percent of the 42 850 total traffic fatalities Studies by NHTSA show the majority of Americans support the use of enforcement efforts to reduce the threat of impaired drivers Nearly 97 percent of Americans view drunk driving as a d Continued on page 2... |
