The 50 (lerman volunteers were part of a program that's brought more than 900 people to tin Four Corners in the last four years. Nearly 300 of them have done service projects in and around Moab. Last week's projects included helping to build two houses for the Grand County Housing Authority, clearing invasive trees in Negro Bill Canyon and along Mill Creek, painting a mural on the Mill Creek Parkways Main Street underpass, plus several apprenticeship programs with local businesses, ranchos and artists. Contractor Joe Downard, who supervised the housebuilding group, said his team was hard working, cheerful and willing to learn. They helped frame and wrap two buildings in the new affordablesubdivision off Holyoak Lane, bringing the homes closer to occupancy and helping the prospective own-housing ers meet their volunteer-hourrequirement. s Wildland Scapes supervisor Mary Frothingham directed the trail and clearing work at Negro Bill and on school board property by Mill Creek. She says that like the construction group, her volunteers provided fret1 labor that might not be available otherwise. Their work will also help secure matching funds from the Bureau of Land Management for the high school summer work program Wildland Scapes coordinates. The new mural, a blend of Van Gogh and Dali with a jeep thrown in for good measure, was overseen by local artist Sydney Francis, who said it was satisfying to see four trained artists be able to agree on and execute a single design. other Parkway murals, supervised by Francis and artist Sunnie Holland, can be seen in the same Main Street underpass and at the one that runs beneath 400 East. Another group of German Two somethings wall be back in August to continue the projects started last week or tackle new ones. It's not exactly the vacation most people 20- - dream of, but it suits these visitors just fine. Daniel Volunteer it Frischkopf, 29, says makes perfect sense to him: This landscape is so gorgeous, and weve had such a great time in the States. It's just good to give something back.
