Ford Hilltop Times staff In the late rounds of the intramural volleyball tournament, the 75th Civil Engineering Group pulled off a coup by beating the previously undefeated 75th Medical Group. In the championship match, CEG proved the victory was no fluke, again dropping the clinic team 6-- 15-- 15-9, 7, 8. Ive been waiting for this for three years, said 75th CEG hitter Brian Mauhar. Weve taken second place two years in a row. It feels good. We knew right away that we had the best team, said 5th-yeCEG player Leo DaSilva. Even though Med Group looked really good, we were totally confident we could beat them. The Med Group, having warmed up from a previous match, jumped on the CEG early, taking the first game 6 as time expired. But the momentum turned quickly in game two. Thats what really got us in the game, DaSilva said. ar 9-- When we lost that first game, we knew we had to show what we are about. I think its good that we lost the first game because it got us going. CEG, 2 during the regular season, took time to regroup and refocus and stormed back in the second game, using a combination of tough net defense and strong serving to even the match and rattle their opponents. One of the things I mentioned was that we had to relax, play ball, not be so tense, said CEG hitter Victor Marshall. Theyre a strong team, a really strong team. I figured if we settled down, they had to beat us in two matches because we put them in the losers bracket. Our people did settle down, and came back and put it to them. Marshall, a volleyball veteran, did his part by a serving strong second game, scoring 11 straight points off a varied repertoire, including his favorite floater. The CEG decided to hit away from the Med Groups strength along the front line, and the strategy paid off as CEG ran away with game two. I think the main thing that happened was that Vic got on a serving roll, said Med Group team captain Tim Mazzola. He just got in a zone and had us on our heels. We just had trouble passing the ball, and if you have trouble passing the ball theres no way youre going to be able to set up a play. Our passing broke down a little bit, agreed Med Group outside hitter Dave Turner. Vic had a strong serve and kept the pressure on us. We werent able to pull it out. The third game' was much tougher on the Med Group, as early mistakes put them in a quick 1 hole from which they never recovered. Even after battling back 9-- 20-ye- ar 3-1- Photos by Steven R. From the second game on, CEG hitters were able to take advantage of the Med Groups net defense. to within five points at the clinic team couldnt get over the hump, dropping the next two points, the match and the championship. ' Once you develop momentum, if you have your legs underneath you and you start making your passes, you can take another team out of their game quickly, Mauhar said. We started going to their weaker sides. We knew exactly who their strongside players are and started going opposite of them and hitting over their weaker players. We were looking to close it out, Marshall said. We figured ifwe went down in three, it was a whole new tournament. I didnt want to go into another match against . these guys. If success was gauged by the number of AFMC team-er- s on each intramural roster, CEG had to be a pretournament favorite with three players on their squad (Mauhar, DaSilva and Marshall) . But Mauhar said that misfortune hit their team early. One of the CEG players was lost to a knee injury, and one of their strongest outside hitters was TDY. 8-1- 3, mirKKSMm Brigham MOTOR CO.V 4i tGMS; ).& SERVICE) 723-525- 5 Utah s "Only" Full Line GM Deafer Is In K 111 h-f- ad-I 399-562- 1 Going into the finals, I was actually feeling a little bit down, Mauhar said, 'but everyone picked it up on the team. Everyone played their positions well, and it worked out for us. The championship magically turned the two-tim-e bridesmaids into the top team on the base and gave DaSilva a small parting gift as the 1999 AFMC teamer left Tues- day for his next assignment. Ive been playing for five years and we come to the playoffs and finish as runners up. We never win. This is my last tournament and I told them we better win, DaSilva joked. The Med Group, even while disappointed with the loss, was satisfied with their successful 11-- 0 season and runner up finish. Making the playoffs and contending for the championship capped the most successful volleyball season in recent memory for a clinic team.
