Archaeological treasure found at Glen Canyon The discovery of a prehistoric ladle by two Colorado youths led to the recovery of a rare archeological treasure at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Dennis Doleshall and Chip Beaver, both 17, of Laporte, Colorado, discovered the ladle in a small alcove on the shores of Lake Powell and turned it in to Park Rangers, Dennis and Chip then accompanied Ron Everhart of the Park Service to the site where two complete vessels were recovered. The excavation report Sled by the Park Service indicates that the three vessels were made by prehistoric Anasazi Indians and are about 800 years old. Besides the ladle there is a brown bowl used, for cooking. Inside the bowl were smears of corn meal mush preserved in the dry alcove, a very rare archeological find. The third vessel is also a bowl used for cooking. It is painted on the inside with a design. The bowl had cracked twice while in use and was repaired by the Indians by drilling holes on either side of the cracks and tying them together with black-on-whi- te , GET SOME GREEN BACK FROM IFUJJB FHLE3 ne yucca twine. Crime prevention program scheduled to begin in Moab In an interview Monday, Sept 27, Moab Police Chief Les Stiles outlined a crime prevention program which will be initiated in the near future. The program includes provisions for kidnap prevention. Stiles commented that he has been contacted by a large number of citizens and representatives of civic organizations during this week, who expressed concern over prevention of apparently kidnappings, sparked by a series of recent kidnappings elsewhere in the state. Stiles said that the crime prevention effort will be based cm the nationwide He McGruff program. added that Captain Dan Ison g is attending a training program on crime prevention, presented by the National Crime Prevention Institute. He stated that the poire department will provide information and assistance to civic groups and interested citizens on all phases of the program. The department has already week-lon- begun working with local PTA groups. As part of the kidnapping program, the department hopes to set up fingerprint stations at schools and other locations, so that parents can have a record of their childrens fingerprints. Information will also be provided on additional steps which can be taken, including a yearly photograph of each child, blood type and keeping a lock of hair. Stiles stressed that these steps will not prevent a kidnapping, but can be of great benefit to law enforcement agencies after a kidnapping occurrs. To aid in prevention of kidnapping, the department will conduct awareness programs, he said, for both children and adults, consisting of semin-- v ars, workshops and school programs. The Moab PTA and Police Department will sponsor the first in a series of kidnapping prevention and information programs this Saturday, Oct. 2 in the room at Helen M. Knight Elementary School. The taking of fingerprints will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through 4 p.m. Representatives of the multi-purpo- full-tim- se PTA and police department will be available to answer any questions parents might have. Stiles commented that parents may take advantage of the program, regardless of their childrens age or school attended. He added he anticipates that the service will also be available at Southeast Elementary School on Oct. 9 and at the Middle School on Oct. 16. of the Representatives HMK PTA will be assembling emergency identification packets for each student at the school, with the written permission of the students parents. The packets will be placed in the students school folder. Duplicate packets are available to parents who wish to have them. This information is confidential and is protected by a PTA spokesman law, No one will have said. access to this information without the written permission of the childs parents. For further information, contact the police depart8 ment at or the PTA. Stiles remarked that there should be a good deal of support for the programs, as concerned residents have indicated interest in the issue. He cautioned that a aprational, proach was the best method to deal with the problem. He added that all phases of the program will be offered on an individual basis, as requested. The McGruff program will include several phases, inNeighborhood cluding Watch. Under Neighborhood Watch, residents of each neighborhood form groups, with the assistance of the police dedpartment, who receive information on crime prevention, home security, and reporting suspicious activity to police. Stiles commented that similar communiin other programs ties have resulted in significant drops in crime rate. Also included will be where Operation I.D., valuables are marked with the owners identification and "McGruff House. McGruff House is similar to a previous program entitled Under Helping Hands. the program, participants 259-893- ep step-by-st- homes are marked with a large identifying sign identifying it as a location where a child can go for help.
