Show The Telephone rates discussed at Rotary Club meeting The Rotary Club speaker for 13, 1986 was M.L Terry, Manager of Contel in the Moab District. His topic was local telephone rates. Local telephone rates are directly under the control of the Utah Public Service Commission, under which the telephone company is permitted to earn a certain amount of profit on their investment. Nationally, telephone communications have been regulated by the FCC since 1938. The FCC artificially increased long distance rates from which local telephone companies were subsidized, permitting low local rates. Under this system many people in small communities and rural areas secured telephones. A few years ago the FCC deregulated the long distance service permitting many new companies to offer the service in competition with AT&T, resulting in the loss of subsidy for the local service suppliers. As a result, to operate at a profit it became necessary for local services to seek additional income by economies in operation or an increase for Contel before the Utah PSC will amount to an increase of about $4.00 per month for a residential telephone. Rates for pay phones will go to 25 cents per call. Each pay phone represents an investment of approximately $1,000. The application for Contel s rate increase throughout its operations in Utah is in a book over three inches thick. This application is available for inspection and study at the office Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 5, 1986 at Hanner Funeral Chapel for Deborah Joan Swanson, 29 of Moab. Burial was in Queen City, Texas Cemetery with Hanner Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements. Ms. Swanson, a native of Grapevine, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1 in Moab, Utah from undetermined causes. She was employed as a supervisor in the National Park Service. Survivors are her parents Mr. and Mrs. Earl Swanson of Grapevine, Texas and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins from different parts of the United States. We gave our loved one Joan back service measured providing (charges based on outgoing calls by a telephone). The PSC does not favor this type of billing. Contel s accounting department has one department dedicated exclusively to rate studies. Regarding the present request for rate increase there is a public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1986 at 7 p.m. in the courthouse. several By way of comment, businessmen said that recent mechanical changes made here have resulted in much improved service. past week GCHS Lady Red Devils once again split back to back games last weekend as they squeaked by a spunky San Juan Bronco team 46-4- 4 on Friday and lost to a very fine Olathe, Colorado Lady Pirate 7 last quintet by 14 points Saturday. The were somewhat dusty and jittery, especially offensively, following nearly a month off since their last outing. Defensively, coach Ken Yama was extremely pleased with the girls effort on both nights but could do nothing but shake his head at the Devils cold shooting in both games. As has been the rule most of the season, the Lady Devils were led offensively in both contests by Debra Too Tall Taylor with 11 points each game and junior guard Trina Packard with 24 and 12 points respectively. However, it was the over-a- ll team defensive play of the Devils which actually won the game against San Juan and was responsible for holding the No. 1 rated girls 2 A team in Colorado to 24 points under their season average. Moabs young junior varsity won their third game of the season as be7 they defeated San Juan hind Tammy Talbots 12 points and spirited team play.' Coach Bernie Radcliffe has his young starting to jell and gain confidence in their own game and it shows in the final scoreboard tally. The Moab girls next begin a two week marathon of five games in 11 days starting this Thursday when they host and seek to revenge a loss to the Monticello Lady Buckaroos. Game times are: JV 5:45 p.m. and Varsity 7:30 p.m. The then travel to Emery High School on Friday and East Carbon High the following Tuesday before returning home to host a tough Pallisade, Colorado quintet on Friday for Winter Homecoming. 51-3- r i vKrfW She-Devi- Terry .
