Show A4 The Times-lndependen- Thursday, Mar. 15, 1984 t, Grand High School news happenings . . . News Items of Interest Prepared by the Journalism Department at Grand County High School shouldnt make it a law. I think they should let the kids decide. In response to this, sponsors of the bill added strong language to prevent any government from writing an official prayer, or forcing any student to pray. They also added a measure that would allow religious groups to use public buildings for religious purposes, which is now supposed to be limited by the Supreme Court decision that mandates the separation of church and state. If the proposal passes the Senate, it will be in the hands of the state of legislatures to decide. the states would have to approve the measure for it to become an amendment to the Constitution. Concerned citizens should contact their local legislators. 50 BUCKS A BRAIN! by Jacque Young Congratulations are in order for three deserving students from Grand County High who recently won the most improved student award. This award is given to ' students who made a conscientious effort to improve themselves during the quarter, either by raising their grades or having a better attitude toward school and life. The three students given the $50 award from Hefner Funeral Home were Shane LeFevre, Corina Eshom, And Chris Sterry, Jr. The Hefners wanted to let students know that there are people in the community who are proud of those that strive to better themselves and become the best they can be. Corina said she was. Shocked! when she found out she had won. Chris said it was, Great! I used the money to fix my bicycle." How do you get to be a most improved student? Anyone can apply. Mrs. Broschat in the career center has applications for students who feel they quality for this award. Mrs. Broschat is also quick to point out that those who have improved from an F to a D are considered as seriously for the award as those who have improved from a B to an A. The deadline for third quarter is April 6. So if you feel you have improved in any way this quarter see Mrs. Broschat. There might be $50 in your future! Two-thir- SOUTH PACIFIC by Bev Shupe chorus and drama students will be involved in the musical production South Pacific. The play, directed by Bill Blue, will be presented at Star Hall on March 15, 16, and 17. Tickets can be purchased from cast members at $2 for children, $3 for adults, $10 for family. Corina Guire who plays one of the lead roles, said, Its been a lot of hours, time, money, and headache but it will be worth it in the end. There was a lot of imagination put into the props, backgrounds, and costumes. Corina said, The hard part for all of us is trying to get a tan. The play takes place on the Pacific where it is supposed to be hot and summery. Im sure there will be a lot of runs in nylons before it is all over. Cornia said that its hard learning all the lines because the character she plays never knows what she is talking about. Its like shes taling in circles, and she never knows what to say, said Corina. Corina alan said the humorous parts are fun but when the dramatic part comes One-hundr- PRAYER IN SCHOOL by Sean Hofhine Molly Bredemeier A new debate is raging in Washington, and it concerns the separation of church and state, mainly concerning prayer in school. Republicans are supporting an amendment to the Constitution that any law that denies the individual or group the right to silent or vocal prayer. Opponents say that the proposed amendment allows too much government control of religious observances in the public schools, and would subject Students to coercion and humiliation and undermine the true value of prayer. Mrs. Cindy Blue, teacher at GCHS, stated, I dont think there should be school prayer. Our Constitution explicitly states that there should be a separation between church and state. Tina Plastow, senior, said, They would prohibit up, its hard to change. Its not just physical, you have to put yourself in their shoes. Another comment Corina made was, After knowing Scott Cooke most of my life its hard seeing him as a French lover. Scott Cooke, who plays another lead role, thinks this production is going to be a success. The music is going to be good, and there are a lot of famous songs, said Scott. There was a practice last Saturday from 10 in the morning till four in the afternoon. Scott said, It went really well. Scott says Corina has been a nervous wreck all week, and that she likes the taste of fake brandy too much. Many of the cast members say that this play is going to be one of the best ones theyve done. 1 MOAB LOSES IN PLAY by Greg Yockey The Moab Red Devils lost their chance of qualifying for the region tournament after being defeated by the Pineview Panthers by the score of 73-4The Devils were plagued by turnovers as they commited 23 of them in the first half alone. That was the key to the success of Pineview. Pineview was by far the best outside shooting team that Moab has faced all year and Moab wasnt able to stop the long shots by Roberts and Larson.. Roberts was the high scorer for the game with 18 points and Larson was right behind him with 16 points. David Lewis played a super game on the boards for Moab as he pulled down 10 rebounds, many of which were in a crowd of two or three Pineview Players. Mark Walker was the high scorer for the Devils with 11 points. Moab had a new coach, Todd POST-SEASO- N 7. Petersen, the third one in the last four years. This meant learning a new style of play and for the seniors, this is the third time they had to start the year from scratch and learn a new technique instead of building on what they have already learned. Although the Vietnam War post-traumat- f ic produced the lowest psychiatric causally rate of any previous war, the post-wemotional casualty rate has been overwhelming. Few veterans of this era are immune to the effects of this experience. The low casualty rate during the war is primarily attributed to each service person knowing their release date from combat. This had the effect of encouraging people to hang on, because of knowing when it would end. However, since the war, emotional problems among veterans have been overwhelming. The symptoms appear to be a result of a variety of causes. Frequent rotations of troops and small combat units prevented group identification and group security. As a result, primary identification was with buddies or small groups. Few Vietnam veterans belong to veterans groups or hold reunions as is seen from other wars. In addition, this quick' transition did not provide for opportunity to let down and share feelings and experiences with other service persons. It may also be noted that civilian populations exposed to disasters experience this disorder as well. This is particularly true if traumas are not dealt- with shortly after prolonged and major stresses. Symptoms of Syndrome include maladaptive panic reactions, flashbacks, drug and alcohol abuse, survival guilt, withdrawl from intimacy with friends and family, frequent divorce, employment instability and many others. In addition, the spouses and families are frequently caught up in the turmoil resulting from this disorder. Although the symptoms may appear at any time, it has only been in the past four or five years that this disorder has received significant attention and treatment opportunities initiated. One violation, at the Moab KOA Campground, was for failure to meet bacteriologic quality standards. Campground owners reported this week that arrangements have been made for the facility to be hooked onto the Spanish Valley culinary water system. We suggest that people contact their water suppliers if their system is listed as being in violation of standards and urge the supplier to find the problem in the water system and correct it, said Gayle Smith, Director of the Bureau of Public Water Supplies. Congress included public notice of water system deficiencies in the Safe Drinking Water Act. In a 1984 agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Utah Department of Health agreed, to release information to the public every 90 days. Each water system is sent a letter by the department, and is required to respond within 30 days. They are also required to notify their users that the system is not meeting standards. Some systems simply dont or said wont notify their public, Smith. Thats why the new regulations with EPA require that we make the notification when they dont. We want to encourage officials to correct any deficiencies in the water supply immediately upon detection of routine unsatisfac Two-third- Volleyball meet will continue here this week The annual Canyonlands Volleyball tournament, which began the weekend of March 3, concludes this Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17.
