Show THE MEANING AND PURPOSE OF U.N. DAY CITED Two historic dates are associated associa-ted with the founding of the United Nations, June 26 and October 24, 1945. On June 26, the representatives representa-tives of fifty-one nations concluded conclud-ed their deliberations in San Francisco Fran-cisco and. signed the U.N. charter. On October 24, 1945, the required number of ratifications having been filed with our State Department, the United Nations came into legal existence. Thus a document which embodied the hopes and plans of peoples sickened and ruined by the most destructive and murderous war in history became a practical means through which mankind could work for peace with justice. Desiring to mark that date officially, offic-ially, the General Assembly passed in 1947 an American sponsored resolution that October 24th shall hrnceforth be officially called "United Nations Day" and shall be devoted to making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations Na-tions and to gaining their support for the work of the United Nations. The observance of U.N. Day is important because, joining us with fellow human beings around the entire planet, it makes visible our common support of the principles and objectives of the United Na-1 I tions. It can be made an effective . way to introduce people to the United Nations, as well as to give those already interested and aware an opportunity to reaffirm their support. Let us always remember if the United is to succeed, it will be because be-cause people are determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.
