Show Friday, October 11, 19 k & III nnnrTTnrmn From Daily Herald Staff and Wire Reports The following are brief reviews of movies, rated on a system of: 4 stars: outstanding; 3 stars: worthy effort; 2 stars: so-sstar: a bomb. 2 DAYS IN THE VALLEY, 2 12 stars: is a crime caper that is quirky and interesting but full of violence, crime, bad language and sex. A top-rat- e cast keeps the story spinning. COURAGE UNDER FIRE, 4 stars: An exceptional film about the complexity of modern war; both in terms of technology and human frailties. Denel Washington and Meg Ryan w ithin a story in which they never meet, but couldn't be more closely joined. I Patriotic without patronizing, graphic without glamorizing, this is an important and powerful film. Rated R; for w ar violence and language. D3 THE MIGHTY DUCKS, 2 12 stars: Once again the underdogs take to the ice to prove their mettle. This time it means playing for a new coach in a new school where the varsity rules and the alumni demand victory. EMMA, 3 12 stars: So buoyant that it becomes featherweight, "Emma" is a delicious confection that shows Gwyneth Paltrow's stellar talents and another piece of evidence about Jane Austen's enduring popularity. Rated PG. 1 o; co-st- ar k & -- -- 'Utl i H H hum niiiimmrniiiiniiHiiniiriiiiiM Wayans plays the usual, tough cop assigned a new partner. More grisly than some (rated R), the film scores highly on the action meter, with original stunts and numerous fight scenes. HOUSE ARREST, 2 stars: Although "The Parent Trap" and "House Arrest" are based on the same unrealistic premise, "The Parent Trap" was charming, while "House Arrest" simply takes hostages. It's an act of terrorism on mov iegoers. Rated PG: for divorce issues, food fights and kidnapping. INDEPENDENCE DAY, 4 stars: "Independence Day" is a thrilling, exciting, action-packe- d fantasy about an alien invasion and the ordinary people who do extraordinary things to save the world. This has all the chills and spills one could want in an adventure film. Rated PG-1- 3 for sci-destruction and violence. JACK, 3 stars: Robin Williams gives a gentle, buoyant and touching portrayal of a boy trapped in a man's body in "Jack," a film by Francis Ford Coppola. Rated PG-- 1 3; for some sexual references. KAZAAM, I 12 stars: From the movie's inescapable ad campaign, we know that what follows is supposed to be a thrill ride of magical effects and witty as Max makes his three wishes. wait in What we get is a d Six Flags line on the e tundra for a viomild some Rated PG; spritz. lence. LAST MAN STANDING. 3 stars: Bruce Willis plays the quiet tough guy in this stylish action picture which drops a prohibition era gang war in the middle of the old west. Look for some serious gun play as Willis' professional works both sides of the street, escalating the conflict with every move. MATILDA, 3 12 stars: "Matilda" is that rare treasure: a children's story that is delightful for adults. While too frightening for small children, the wit and wisdom of author Roald Dahl are well preserved under the excellent direction of Danny Devito, who also stars in the fable. Rated PG; from incidents of exaggerated meaness and ridicule, and mild language. Hugh Grant is well cast as a doctor innocently caught up in a situation over his head. His panic is almost tangible as his life starts to unravel when he refuses to give up asking questions about the death of a homeless man. THE FIRST WIVES CLUB, 3 12 stars: Three swn-to-b- e emerge triumphant when they combine their talent, humor and strength in the often hilarious Club." Goldie Hawn. Bette Midler and Diane Keaton are so great together in this female bonding flick that the film begs for a sequel. THE GLIMMER MAN, 3 stars: a better than average entry in the action category, Seagal and Wayans mix humor, spectacular stunts and an interesting plot to kick off a potential series. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, 3 stars: Tom Cruise and company kick off the first of the big summer films with a worthwhile action picture featuring many of the elements that made the original series so enjoyable. Faring best are the elaborate missions and action sequences. Disappointing is the often predictable plot and occasional credibility gap. Rated PG-1some intense action violence. MULTIPLICITY, 3 stars: Michael Keaton is a gifted actor at the top of his comedic form in "Multiplicity," a story of multiple bodies as well as multiple personfor sexual sitalities. Rated PG-1- 3 uations. THE NUTTY PROFESSOR, 3 stars: Fat jokes and flatulence are II fliMeanee uGfiggKj Of; not usually the stuff of great comedy, but Eddie Murphy succeeds in making an obese science professor sympathetic and a testosterone-glutte- d playboy hilarious in a remake of Jerry Lewis' "The Nutty Professor." Rated PG-1PHENOMENON, 3 stars: John Travolta delivers a remarkable performance in an often beguiling film about a man whose life is changed forever when a burst of light turns him from ordinary to extraordinary. Rated PG; for language and mild sensuality. THE POSTMAN, 4 stars: is a lyrical, moving tale of a shy postman transformed by poetry. It asks us to question what really constitutes greatness in people in a tender film that shows its audience how wonderful movies can be. THE ROCK, 2 12 stars: Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage offer interesting characters in an other 3. shows how much director Lee David Zlotoff loves this film. ; Audiences will. too. THAT THING YOU DO. 3 stars: Four small town musicians get a taste of fame when their'song "That Thing You Do" becomes a national hit and leads them on a humorous and charming journey to Hollywood. Tom Hanks wrote and directed the film by the same name and composed several of the songs. He demonstrates that he has abundant talent behind the screen as he does in front of it. TWISTER, 4 stars for effect. 2 stars for intelligence: As a special effects feast, audiences will leave satisfied in spite of the near nonTHE SPITFIRE GRILL. 4 existent storyline.
