No where is it more hysterically demonstrated than in his named Joe Harper. Completely frustrated by his career, Joe feels the need t0 accomplish something Special to The Daily Herald Let it show, let it show, let it show! While many were anticipat- ing the arrival of the perennial white stuff, black was the color of at Crossroads Plaza Jan. 1 8 as the Sundance Film Festival opened with its aptly titled premier Tale. 's film, A Ever in good taste, writerdirector Kenneth Branagh delivered a witty story of actors and their craft shot in black and white. The film along with the following night marked the start opening gala of the eleven days of screenings, panel discussions and schmoozing that make up the U.S.'s foremost venue for independent filmmakers. Branagh's film, A Midwinter's Tale, set a perfect tone for the open with its story of passion, independence, need, compromise and occasional reality check. Best known by American audiences as the man who brought Shakespeare mainstream with such films as Henry V, Much Ado about Nothing, and the upcoming Othello, this outing has him entirely behind the camera; merging the two loves of his life: Shakespeare and acting The story details the genesis of a production of Hamlet, instigated by a struggling actor meaningful within his Purr crait. Using his own meager funds, he assembles a troupe or passion-choic- e atevbut slightly eccentric actors to perform in a limited run of awef. philosophical instruction to the cast, delivered with a singular, passionate intensity, "Just relax!" Technical problems, personality mount as conflicts and the production moves ever closer to its scheduled open. Branagh's love for the theater and its people is masterfully put to use as he explores each character. As different as night and day, each has their own version of the "bu. the need to validate their own self-worand ability through the creation of a performance. The cast is wonderfully talent-- , ed; handling the difficult task of, playing actors trying to act while resembling real people. Not surprisingly, the film is very British, as well as theatrical. The snappy and rapid banter, combined with the theatrical terminology and British dialogue makes viewing an exercise in concentration, but it is well worth the effort. Though honestly portrayed, the film has its share of eccentrics and expletives, which, like most things British, seem to be much more Mid-winter- Photo courtesy of Spnngville Museum of Art ,U! Still 55 works of art is a significant number, especially when quality and variety are of the essence. Two fine works will not be in the exhibition because they are on ldrUj lsewhere. One is California ifofcrW artist, Edwin Deakin's Gjufejd Pier (1882) and is on loan gath-eritiw- 1 ywn 1J to to the Utah Museum of Fine Art in Salt Lake City and the other, Sam H. Donated by the Smith family of Carmel Calif., the piece is a masterpiece of impressionist light and color. It is a very rare view of pioneer life by one of Utah's grand masters of art.
