As you know, I have a fascination with hotels." Henley was calling from a hotel in Tokyo, where of course from "Hotel California." As founders of the Eagles, they combined pop-h- it sensibilities with hard looks at what was going on around them. "Back in '76 we wrote 'The Last Resort.' It doesn't take a prophet or a seer to figure this stuff out," Henley, 48, said. He's kept the pressure on during his solo career, from the early "Johnny Can't Read" up through the more personal "Heart of the Matter." His latest opus is a bonus track on "Actual Miles," his new album released last greatest-hit- s week. The song, the "Garden of Allah" single, is even in a smart-alecmore bleak way. In it, the devil returns to Earth to discover that America has gone so far off the rails that he's not needed he has, in effect, been made obsolete by evil men. Statisseven-minut- i jffi nothing-is-sacre- e k tics, the criminal-justic- e system, the media all things that were designed with good intent have been turned to evil means. "Garden of Allah" is being touted as the second coming of "Hotel California," perhaps ley's definitive and most widely known piece of w ork. Based upon a legendary Sunset Strip hotel, the concept for '"Garden of Allah' has been kicking around for quite some time," Henley said. He'd read about the hotel back in the mid- -' 80s "and I kept it Hen- the Eagles were finishing their reunion tour. "It's another in a series of hotel songs, because I think hotels are a great metaphor for life. We check in and eventually check out," he said. As he was completing the song, he read Andrew Delbanco's new book, "The Death of Satan (How Americans Have Lost the Sense of Evil)," and he knew there was validity in his tale. The rest just seemed to fall into place. The mood of California in the summer, when Henley was finishing the song, seemed perfect for it. The Simpson trial was winding down; between the time Henley finished the song and the time it was released in late October, the verdict came down bolstering, Henley feels, the point of the song, including his diatribe in it about "I'm a gun for expert witnesses a a liarbecause I'm I'm hire, saint, there are not facts, there is no truth, just data to be manipulatedI can get you any result you like. What's it worth to ya?" "We are living in the age of cultural relativism. In other words, 'This is wrong compared to what?'" Henley said. "The lines between right and wrong, good and evil have been blurred more than ever, which is what this song and Andrew Delbanco's book deal with." "We only seem to pay attention to the most obvious of evils. It contained a line that, at the time, seemed shocking in its callousness and amorality "Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet? ... Get the widow on the set." Shocking in '82. Standard industry practices in '95. "It's just treacle now, isn't it?" Henley said. "That song, it's just ... " He trailed off with a sigh. But seeing so many of his bleak observations come to pass has become routine for Henley, including his and Glenn Frey's classic 1976 treatise on the pillaging of California, "The Last Resort" 10 jl MOVIES: E! "I feel a duty and an obligation to give back. In certain Eastern philosophies it's called 'service to the world.' That may sound quaint and disingenuous to some, but I really believe it's the only way to live a balanced life."
