MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -Lt. T.D. Jones is a stocky, barrel-cheste- d police officer with a crew cut, and he doesn't so much talk as bark. On Friday nights as summer turns to fall, he commands an army of cops at the old football stadium downtown. Wind whips through the tunnel at one of the entrance gates, and at one spot along the street there are more officers than civilians. They command a phalanx of swaggering teen-ageto keep moving, watching them closely for bulges in their jackets that could be guns. We're still going through an experimental stage," Jordan said. "He's got a lot of ability. But he's so conscious about being in the right place at the right time, it's kind of altered his natural instincts of catching and passing the ball. Once he gets more comfortable with where he's supposed to be at all times, we'll see those skills show up." The wait for Longley's skills to show has been going on since the Australian entered the NBA as the Minnesota Timberwolves' top draft pick in 1991 out of New Mexico. Despite soft hands, a good passing eye, a decent shooting touch and a big body, his career averages are only 5.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.1 blocked shots ra per game. Longley has been both injtrry-an- d and he was hurt by a long holdout as a rookie. Playing in the troubled Timberwolves or; ; foul-pron- e, ganization also probably stunted his growth as a pro. "I had a bad start, and over the years I've just never developed that confidence or groove or whatever it is," Longley said. "I'm still trying to establish that. This is a good place for me to do it." Bulls coach Phil Jackson agrees. "In our style of offense, we need a center to hold the post and be a passer. Those are the best attributes of Luc's game," he said. "On defense, we need his big body to plug the gaps. Luc's got the ability to do it." In reality, however, Jordan often shoots in such situations. And like Cartwright before Longley has trouble knowing when him to expect a pass or when to set up for a possible rebound. the ar I precautions against violence are as scary as the violence itself. The stepped-u- p police presence at the Montgomery stadium is being copied at games in Birmingham, where some schools have employed metal detectors that scan everyone from competitors to fans to tuba players. And it's a given that at games between city rivals, fans for each school are kept on opposite sides of the stadium, separated by a fence that's guarded by police. "If something breaks loose in here, we just seal this place off," Jones announced in a gravelly tone more befitting an Army commander plotting a battle plan. "Nobody gets outta here." Such a show of force at a single game in Montgomery is incredible, considering the police force for the capital city of about 200,-00- 0 people is 459. At least one officer stands in each tunnel that leads into the stadium. Two patrol each end zone, and others roam the streets and the inner shell of Cramton Bowl, the same stadium that hosts the Blue-Gra- y college all-stgame each Christmas Day. "There's so many police here that we can get to the trouble quickly and get it defused before it out," Jones said. School officials in the Birmingham area, where both fatal shootings occurred, point out that they happened after the games and away from the stadiums. And in truth, sports cannot be blamed for the violence that also happens at malls or movie theaters. But it seems the games that children play are no longer immune to spreads it. "We're talking about a society where an American child under 16 is killed every two hours with a handgun," said Richard Lapchick of Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport and Society. "There are 1,500 high d gangs in the United States, and 2,000 assaults per hour in schools. To think that it will not spill over to our sports fields is naive." It appears the games were guilty only in their role as a magnet for lots of young people, many of whom don't need an excuse to start school-base- trouble. "As long as you've had schools, you've had kids fighting," said Bruce Wright, superintendent of Jefferson County schools. "The difference between then and now is we have a generation of children who decide the solution to a problem is to kill somebody." The massive police presence at games leaves little doubt that times have changed. Scarier still is the fact that this is not an exclusively urban problem. One game where shots were fired was a matchup between city rivals in Birmingham. But the other one happened the same night at a game in rural Enterprise in south Alabama. Wright said it appeared gangs were to blame for the Birmingham incident. "In some cases, if you have heavy gang activity that may be a place where they can strut their stuff and get some publicity," Wright said. In Montgomery, the authorities' job is not over when the fourth quarter ends. Police make sure everyone leaves the stadium immediately, and officers sprawl out methodically over several city blocks to head off trouble. "', h The approach seems to be working. The only recent trouble at a city game came, two weeks ago when a teen was arrested for toting a gun. get-toug- , "The main thing I can see to do is what they're doing now post the police all around," said Willie Moore, who was in the stah'ds watching his son play. "They have to put on a clean game for The people who want to come out and enjoy it." |
