Bicycle accidents are one of the most frequent causes of injury-relate- d death for young children. Since the first laws went into effect, the rate of fatalities for children has decreased every year, proving that helmets DO make a difference. Unfortunately, not enough states have these laws. It is estimated that universal bicycle-helm- We have three children. The law in our state requires children under 15 to wear bicycle helmets when riding a bike. My husband has told our children they don't have to wear them. He is afraid people will think they are sissies and make fun of them. This is not true. Most of the kids in our neighborhood wear bicycle helmets. My husbands attitude upsets me. I believe our lawmakers have good reasons to require that helmets be worn. My husband insists that only one in a million kids gets hurt riding a bike and that I am exaggerating the problem. It also bothers me that my husband is teaching our kids to ignore the law and make decisions on the basis of what people might think of them. I am upset that he is giving our children the impression that my rules can be ignored. Please tell me what to do, Ann.
