Basketball GREEN two-yea- Even before the NCAA lost a Supreme Court appeal Monday, settlement talks had begun with coaches who have been awarded almost $67 million from the ruling body of college sports. The NCAA, looking at a total bill of around $80 million counting lawyer fees, has offered $44 million to the roughly 1,900 coaches, NCAA spokesman Wally Renfro said. A lawyer for the coaches, who had their salaries fixed as "restricted earnings coaches," said the latest offer of $58.5 million probably will be increased since the Supreme Court on Monday let stand a ruling that the NCAA acted unlawfully in capping coaches' salaries. The NCAA's lawyers said the lower court ruling "places in grave doubt the future of conmetitive intercollegiate athletics." Football BAY, Wis. (AP) Brilliant Randall backup Cunningham and his receivers proved Monday night who's No. 1 in the NFC. For now, at least, it's the Minnesota Vikings. Cunningham, out of football in 1996, threw for 442 yards and four touchdowns as the Vikings defeated the Packers on the muddy turf of Lambeau Field, constantly beating the Green Bay defense with long passes that Randy Moss, Cris Carter and Jake Reed took away from defenders. It was the first loss for Green Bay after four wins and left the with Denver and Vikings Jacksonville as the NFL's only unbeaten teams. And it ended a winning streak at Lambeau Field including four postseason games by the Packers, who last lost here on Sept. 10, 1995, to St. Louis. "I love playing the game again," Cunningham said. "It's about times when things change and we have a little bit of control in our life. I'm around great people and great coaches and a great offensive line." And, of course, three great receivers, who dominated on a muddy field, as the Vikings rolled up 545 yards in intermittent rain and occasional showers against a defense that entered the game ranked No. 1 in the NFL. Cunningham, the who signed with Minnesota as a backup last season and is replacing the injured Brad Johnson, had TD passes of 52 and 44 yards to Moss, 56 yards to Reed and 24 yards on a high-flyin- 37-2- Former Utah Jazz player Jose Ortiz, who played center for the Puerto Rican national team at this summer's Goodwill Games and World Basketball Championships, has received r a ban for using steroids. According to a statement issued Monday by the Greek Basketball Federation, the Ortiz tested positive for the banned drug stanozolol in a test taken during the World Championships held here from July 29 to Aug. 9. A second sample tested positive on Sept. 17. " Stanozolol is the same steroid Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. ', Boxing k k Mike Tyson is going all way to the Nevada Supreme Court to try to keep His psychological records under wraps. After losing another bid Monday to keep the public from getting a glimpse inside t'yson's mind, attorneys for the former heavyweight fhampion said they would (nake an emergency appeal to the state's highest court. At issue is whether reports from a team of psychiatrists fliat examined Tyson for five flays last month to give to the Nevada Athletic Commission should also be made public. s ? Prairie View A&M's band' had been given a suspension for taking part in a" brawl with the Southern"" University band during of a game Sept. 19. The suspension included last weekend's Al Lipscomb State Fair Classic in Dallas. Three of the TDs came in the second quarter as the Vikings broke a tie to lead at halftime. "Any team that plays the Vikings better get some pressure on the quarterback," said coach Mike Green Bay Holmgren, whose team didn't get a sack of Cunningham. "Those big receivers are going to cause a problem unless you do and we didn't get any pressure tonight." Cunningham, who was as he gained the most passing yards ever against the Packers, has 10 TD passes without an interception since replacing Johnson, who broke 24-1- 3-- 3 0 20-of-- Niners look to pick up pieces Antonio Langham complained he couldn't get a break from the officials. Jamie Brown griped about the crowd noise. Chris Doleman suggested the 49ers got more penalties than they deserved. Coach Steve Mariucci didn't want to hear it, not after San Francisco had an tying 22 penalties in a loss Sunday to previously NFL-recor- d 26-2- 1 Buffalo. "It was unbelievable and uncharacteristic," Mariucci said Monday. "There were more penalties and more turnovers (four) than we've had all year." The penalties were particularly galling to the 49ers who went to Buffalo with a chance to become the first team in league history to gain more than 500 yards in four straight games only to come up short because of their shabby play. They did flag down a NFL record of a much different sort by matching the Brooklyn Dodgers and Chicago Bears, who each had 22 penalties in separate games in 1944. San Francisco's 178 yards lost to penalties was a team record. Langham, an offseason free agent acquisition, was called for three penalties, including two for pass interference besides being beaten for a touchdown. In the game's aftermath, he groused about what he considered questionable calls. "It just seemed there were a lot of calls on our side of the ball and not so much on their side of (3-1- the ball," Doleman added. The Bills, though, were called for 12 penalties. Brown, starting at left tackle for injured Dave Fiore, had problems getting off the ball and was repeatedly beaten by Bruce Smith in the second half. Brown, who had three false starts, said the crowd noise made it hard for him to hear Steve Young's snap count. Mariucci said he didn't think the 49ers were unfairly singled out by the officials and added they have to contend with crowd noise every week, points he drove home to the players during team meetings Monday. "For me to sit here and blame officials or blame something else, no," Mariucci said. "Most of the flags we feel, after watching films, we're very legitimate. So really, there are no excuses. You're always going to get your questionable calls each week, and there were some, but we have to look at ourselves and correct it and eliminate it." Doleman agreed that's what the 49ers should and would do. "When you get a whipping like this you have to sit back and evaluate everyone collectively," he said. "We've had some highs and lows, so I'm not giving up on anyone. We'll be back." However, the 49ers will consider the possibility of benching Langham, who has given up touchdowns in three of four games and has had a team-high eight penalties called against him this season. his right ankle in the second game of the season. Cunningham also had a TD pass wiped out by a holding penalty and had what would have been a slip off the fingers of Moss, the rookie who dropped to 21st overall in the draft because of personal problems. Moss finished with five catches for 190 yards. d 10 14 21 Green Bay Mm 10 37 24 FG Anderson 25. Mm FG Anderson 19 13 31 44 pass from Cunningham, 10 16 T Davis pass from Pederson (Longwelt kick).
