THE MESSENGER: THE JOAN OF ARC STORY: 2 stars. A loud, bloody, ambitious movie that is so king, it has adopt about five different tones before the thing finally ends. Milla Jovovich most perfect film, both funny and etfgnant. about an irresponsible single 2Aem (Susan Sarandon) who drags her Sfughter (total Portman) to LA. in tofc?torch of a better life. Portman is the ninr here, at her character struggles to stability In life despite having almost StMing to cling to. Her performance is Tufpnching and powerful, with Sarandon "vijniy a step behind her. The end may not satisfying, but the film overall is ry4 fully PO-1,.gem. 3 (infrequent profanity, some seiual dialogue, one scene of mild sexual-- f Review on C1Z ity) C DOGMA: 3 stars. Some will see this r satiric film about a Catholic abortion din-- J ic worker and her entourage of fallen fiTgels who must save the world as bias- jihemous. but it's ultimately a J movie. It has boisterous fun pointing out That clergy and the rules they create are but it never stoops to suggest that God is. Amid the silliness and abun-rym- t ' pop culture references, directorwriter Kevin Smith manages to f jsk relevant spiritual questions. i , Certainly, however, the film is not for f. pse who prefer to see NO humor in R with religion. Preachy, heavy-5ndedrama in which inner-citteens take control of their high school and Ktnand that their voices be heard. It's Cptcal, generic fare: not enough money JHEj books, the principal Is uncaring, the O'icampus police officer prejudges the '-s as hoodlums (which, truth be told, $ny of them are), etc., etc. Characters .&.e drawn with broad strokes and are to gious: You respect her, but you don't like her. When there ts (always from other characters), It sounds too modem and out of place for y France. (One character says Joan is 'nuts.') R (abundant blood profanity, abundant battle-relate- d and death. Including dismemberments and decapitations, brief partial nudity, an especially distasteful scene In which a woman is killed and raped simultaneously) THE GMSLfiA COD& Nut sueened for local critics, this film has enjoyed financial success in the few theaters its played In so far, due mostly to fundarnen- tali st Christian leaders encouraging parishioners to go see it. It deals with codes hidden in the Torah that reveal the t and the end of secrets of the the world. One man wants those codes for evil; another, for good. Almost universally reviled by critics as being a poorly made film with good intentions a Christian tract put on film, basically. Sometimes Incomprehensible, sometimes moody, almost never fun, this cheaply animated attempt to cash in further on the billion-dolla- r Pokemon craze probably isn't even entertaining for kids. An evil clone called Mewtwo seeks to destroy the whole world, and the good Pokemon come to the rescue, with lots of violence to help them out. (The movie then has the nerve to pass off "violence isn't the answer" as its message.) Preceded by a 2Cmi!nute short. t EV I JEMT iHOmMIM. DAH.T UKI mouMti 1200 TOWN CENTRE See MOVIES, CJJ 1 ,. But the end is absolutely ridiculous, as the killer Is caught mostly by coincidence, and not through any cleverness on the part of Washington's character, or his ingenue (played by Angelina Jolle). The revealing of the killer and his motives Is even more ridiculous, and the film totally collapses In the end. R (moderate profanity, several gruesome views of crime scenes, torture) BOWFINOER: 3 stars. Ultra4irferent comedy legends Steve Martin (who also scripted) and Eddie Murphy work together perfectly in this sunny, saUiicai story of a wannabe filmmaker (Martin) trying to film a Hollywood blockbuster without its star (Murphy) knowing he's in It Murphy, in particular, demonstrates why he was once grest with his controlled, hysterical performances as action star Jiff. Bland, predictable romantic comedy In which a confirmed bachelor (a likable yet personality-fre- e Chris O'Donneii) must get married within 24 hours or lose a $100 million Inheritance. That premise Is fun, but the fact that he has girlfriend (Renee Zellweger) makes the end obvious from the beginning. So the fun is in the race against time to convince her to marry him, right? Wrong. She rebuffs him, he asks every girl he's ever known, and the ensuing pandemonium ranges from the mildly entertaining to the outlandishly dumb. There are good moments, though, thanks to supporting cast members like Ed Asner and Hal Holbrook. PO-1- 3 (mod-er- a fe profanity, moderate sexual Innuendo) BATS: 1 star. This pile of guano features a Texas town terrorized by millions of bats. Local sheriff (Lou Diamond Phillips) calls in the world's No. 1 bat expert (Dina Meyer), who of course Is pretty, too. "Bats was made from a template, following to (lie letter every you've ever seen. It's an unoriginal, unfunny, unscary movie, but so harmless that it's hardly worth the effort of hating It. Think "Gremlins," but without any wit or tension, and you've got this movie. "Bats" bites. PO-1- 3 (moderate profanity, brief gore, many bat attacks with some blood) BLUE STREAK: 2 stars. For Martin Lawrence fans only, who will no doubt find his hyper-activ- e mugging and amusing. From an objective stand-- I f 1 must team to forgive himself. Plot holes abound, and there's nothing here we haven't already seen, but better, In "The Fugitive." Jones Is Just phoning in his performance, too. which doesn't help any.
