Freshman bothered by calf injury Dick Harmon hi LaVell's squad will get first taste of Laramie soon ll 7 By DICK HARMON , The Daily Herald La Veil Edwards is facing a first. He's taking a football team to Laramie and none of his players have ever been there wearing Cougar uniforms. Oh, some may have stopped by in Laramie while traveling on gassing up at this glorified truck stop with its lunar landscape and stiff wind, But filling up and making a potty i stop in town is far from playing in War Memorial Stadium. The Cougars haven't been to Laramie since 1992, the first post-TDetmer season. That was 64 BYU wins ago. Neither have two of Edwards' assistant coaches as BYU employees: Barry Lamb and Brian Mitchell. Neither has Edwards's administrative assistant Duane Busby or media relations director Jeff Reynolds as t BYU employees. I Tm wondering if I should pack my ; BYU clothes," Busby said, noting horror ; stories he s heard of how Wyoming fans treat the Cougars. "I didn't have a pleasant experience," Lamb said of his last trip to Laramie as a San Diego State football coach. Now he's a Cougar. Cougars are hated 20 times more than Aztecs in Wyoming. y 1 , .1 DEFENSIVE TACKLE Hans Olsen stopped in Laramie as a high school football player once. He's been trying to indoctrinate his teammates about the place. "He's filled us in," teammate Chris Hoke said. "But what does it matter what they do to us out there as long as we play our game?" y ' "If anything," Hoke said. "It will fire us up. It won't be like at UTEP where there was just no emotion at all in We can use this." warm-up' Use what? Take this week's Wyoming student paper for example. In a wrap-u- p of Wyoming's win over Utah, student columnist Joe Milczewski wrote: "The Cowboys showed up something Saturday night ... that Wyoming people are naturally stronger and smarter than people from Utah." "(The Cougars) are a fearful Mormon juggernaut that tears into towns spewing forth touchdowns and the gospel according to Joe Smith with equal enthusiasm." "Our defensive line will turn Feterik's pretty blonde hair gray and leave his mother looking for soft tis" sues." PPvOVO Luke Staley is invited to to Laramie, but hell likely not play. Staley, fresh off a scope procedure on his left knee, has been out jogging on that knee and it's fine. But his calf muscle on that same leg is knotted up tighter than a golf ball. 'If I don't play, I'd just soon as stay home," Staley said on Thursday. "It's just to hard to stand there on the sidelines and not play." The last time Staley stood on the sidelines was BYlTs overtime win at Utah State in Logan. Ironically, that was the only time this season a BYU back (Fahu Tahi) gained more than 100 yards rushing. go d3 ' "But Fahu is nicked up too," offensive coordinator Norm Chow said. "Hell be OK, but he's not completely healthy." This means the Cougars will rely heavily on fullbacks Kalani Sitake, JASON OLSONThc Daily HeoLd jukes for you: Freshman running back Wyoming with a calf injury. We shouldn't stereotype the kid as a truck-drivin- g redneck from Cody who ties gays to fence posts on his way home from beating up his girlfriend. No, that would be unfair. Wyoming is a great state filled with otherwise sane, smart, caring people. Heck, Patti Edwards is from Wyoming. So was my father, born in Star Valley. Harrison Ford lives in Jackson. There are only a few dumb bigoted i critters, just like in Utak'-- ; 1 1 They all need our love. Milczewski just needs someone to inform him Feterik has dark hair. And the rest of the noisy Laramie BYU haters Saturday? .. . Just tell them to take" a number and stand in line. The Mountain West Conference is ensuring everything will be back to nor-min the Rockies. ; That includes BYU handling it on OREM Just wait until he warms up. Former BYU guard Scott Sonnenberg hit his first seven shots and scored 23 points in only 20 minutes to lead UVSC to a 119-7- 0 demolition of Baltimore City College in the first game of the LaQuinta Rotary Shootout at the McKay Events Center. Baltimore has been a favorite whipping boy for UVSC in this tournament, two years ago, 101-7losing 138-8in three seasons ago and 131-101995. Maybe it should be called the Turkey" Shootout, because as in year's past, Baltimore got cooked, basted and gobbled up by UVSC Thursday night. Sonnenberg scored 12 points in the first 5:14 to lead UVSC to a quick 17-- 9 lead and finished with 18 points in 11 minutes in the first half. The second half was basically used as a practice game as Reinert continually shuffled players into the game. "Donnie Jackson needs more minutes," Reinert said. The more he plays, the better he gets.
