He went 28 of 37 for 310 yards and two touch- f ll J" t-- pass-happ- y downs. "We could have had at least 400, but we. cut back," Feterik said. "It's funny, because last year, it was like, '300 yards, holy V cow." Feterik received plenty of help from running back Luke Staley. The freshman celebrated his 19th birthday by running for 65 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. He also had three catches for 35 yards and another touch- 1 ' - down. Colorado State, on the other hand, was forced to play without its best back. Senior Kevin ' McDougal missed the game with a groin pull. "We thought we'd have him coming into the ballgame," Colorado State coach Sonny Lubick said. "We were cautiously optimistic, to use our doctors' terminology. Staley simply slipped behind Haggans into the end zone where Feterik an easy scoring strike for a 14-- Cougar lead. In the third quarter, Staley got the ball on a student-bodleft from five yards out and smoked Haggans and corner-bacErik Olson, dashing into the end zone behind a block by receiver Jonathan Pittman. "He was this big guy who could run 10.7 seconds for a hundred meters," Reynolds said. "That got attention quick." In Oregon's state playoffs a year ago, Staley averaged 300 yards and three touchdowns in three playoff games and was ranked as the No. 8 fullback in the nation by SuperPrep. IN COUGAR blue, he's only shifted gears in a new position on a new platform. "The only thing he's surprised me with is his poise." Reynolds said. his fluidity in using his body, changing his speed and keeping his balance. He's mature beyond his years and that's been truly amazing." BYlFs other freshman back, Granger High's Fahu Tahi, is another recruiting gem that's come on board and made an impact. Like Staley, he's got power, strength and tremendous balance. Both are hungry. And they're being fed. "I've been ready for this (playing in college) for awhile," said Staley following Thursday's game. "I've been. looking forward to it. v "I knew me and Fahu could carry a little bit of the load." But young Staley has stepped into the spotlight, and edged ahead in what was supposed to be a huge vacuum left by the departure of Ronney Jenkins and Junior Mahe. A year ago, Jenkins was BYlTs No. 1 offensive weapon outside of kicker Owen Pochman, scoring 15 touchdowns and 90 points in 13 games. In two games, Staley has scored 30 points on five touchdowns. He's of the Jenkins' to way point tying one-thir- g rusher. "He's stepped right in and has shown great poise, patience. He's surprised me in STALEY 0 "Every single big back we've played, we've beat," defensive tackle Chris Hoke said. "I was hoping McDougal would play, because I wanted to shut him down." Morris was a little more emphatic. "Even if they'd had Herschel Walker back there it wouldn't have mattered," Morris said. Colorado State's best linebacker, Rick Crowell, also missed much of the game with an injury. . ktVIN LEE Either way, it was clear from the outset BYU was the superior team. Colorado State went on its first possession. Following the punt, Feterik and his offensive associates picked up right where they left off against Washington. Rehrer said that game films have shown that Brighton quarterback Colin Kent, a junior, has the ability to read defenses and get the ball to the right receiver.
