September 17, 1999 Couple billed for IRS' $9.5 million mistake Dear Ann Landers: After reading all the stories in your column about outrageous bills, out story tops them all. I concede, however, that because bur bill was so ridiculous, it was not hard to conclude that it had to be a mistake. Three days before we were to leave on a vacation, we received a notice from the IRS stating that we owed $9.5 million. My husband jokingly said, "Gee, wouldn't it be nice if we made so much money that two-wee- k we owed that much in taxes." To top it off, Ann, they wanted the money within 10 days. We promptly called our accountant, who assured us that he would contact the IRS J- num- ber in the wrong box on a form. That mistake made the computer spit out a bill in t error. The ID, similar to a social security number, made it look like we owed nine-digi- $9,512,345.67. Needless to say, we were relieved that the IRS admitted the error, apologized and let us know we would no longer be pressed for payment. Whew! Modesto, Calif. Thirty minutes before the operation, Dad suffered a massive heart attack in his hospital room. The cardiac surgeon who was to do the heart bypass was summoned. He tried for about 20 minutes to resuscitate Dad, but his efforts failed. Dad died. Even though I was nearby, the doctor made no attempt to see me and explain what had occurred, nor did he express sympathy for my loss. On the day of Dad's funeral, however, I did hear from him.
