MEYERS TV0 344-25- THE DAILY HERALD It's time to speak against rising tide of racist behavior i Till KSDW Some days you wonder why Noah even bothered building that ark. Aug. 10 was one of them. That was when Buford 0. Furrow Jr., a monster who barely meets the biological definition of a human being, went on a rampage in Los Angeles, wounding five in a hailstorm of bullets in a Jewish community center. He also killed a mail carrier along the Leave it to gentle Iowans to sweetly swindle a few million bucks out of the Washington political pros. If there's anything to be learned from the Iowa Straw Poll for Republican presidential candidates held last weekend in Ames, it's that the pros will have to spend more millions in Iowa before the February caucuses there because the Republican nomination is not quite yet a foregone conclusion. That's good for the GOP. That's good even for Texas Gov. George W. Bush, although he may not see it that way right now. The Iowa Straw Poll is such a charmVotes for sale! ingly tricked-u- p affair We've got votes for sale! that it would be a mistake to read too much into the outcome. Bush bought, er, won, the most votes, but not so many that a few other candidates couldn't gain encouragement ANOTHER VIEW from the results. Steve Forbes finished a respectable second, spending about $300 a vote. Elizalteth Dole can take comfort in her third-placshowing with the knowledge that the only Bush ever elected president finished third in the Iowa caucuses in 1988. finally be waning. The best showing by of the far right the standard-bearer- s was by Gary Bauer, at just 9 percent. If indeed Forbes and Dole wind up surviving over the next few months as the alternatives to George W. Bush, this should be a healthy GOP primary campaign. Elizabeth Dole has been blessedly willing to take risks on issues such as gun control. While campaign punditry tends to focus on Forbes' personal wealth, he has not shied away from talking about economic and social ideas in specific terms. A strong challenge from Forbes e IOWA DID claim one victim, Lamar Alexander, who on Monday called off his second try for the White House. It may claim a second victim, but Dan Quayle apparently doesn't want to acknowledge reality just yet. Iowa may also have signaled that the era when social conservatives could strike fear in the heart of the mainstream Republican Party may and Dole might force Bush into a genuine engagement of ideas. It would not serve Bush or the GOP well for him to capture the nomination simply on charm and a sense of inevitability. Bush should be tested in the primaries by other Republicans. He should be forced to match up with others in the field in political skills and intellectual agility. His 31 percent showing in the Iowa Straw Poll just may serve that very useful purpose. hot-butto- n 77i.s editorial recently appeared in the Chicago JYihune. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR When he turned himself in to the an avowed white supremacist, said he went on the shooting spree to send a "wake up call to America to kill Jews." Furrow, a former Aryan Nations security guard, said he killed the mail carrier because, as a Filipino and an employee of the federal government, he was "a target of opportunity." Well, Furrow sent a wake-ucall, but not the one he was hoping to get out. Instead, his act is a warning to all people of good will that violent bigotry and hatred are alive and well, even in this enlightened age in a country seen as the standard bearer of civil rights. FBI in Las Vegas, Furrow, p IT'S EASY to dismiss groups like the Aryan Nations and Ku Klux Klan as bunches of white-tras- h lunatics playing with guns in the middle of the woods. But people said the same thing about Adolf Hitler and his brown shirts. The world paid dearly for that Furrow's shooting spree was a reminder that such extremists weren't exterminated when Russian troops seized control of Berlin, ending the Nazi reign of terror. Nor when Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law, forever abolishing racial segregation in the United States. But outlawing hate groups is not the best idea. For one thing, it goes against the constitutional guarantees of free speech and free assembly. On the other hand, there is no constitutional protection for inciting violence or posing a clear and present danger to the public. WHEN THOSE standards are met, such as overt calls for killing r blacks, Jews and other minorities 5 as well as stockpiling weapons the act. should government But this isn't a job for government alone. We need to use our free speech to counter the messages of these hate groups. As one wise American jurist said, the remedy to bad speech is good speech. It also means doing personal and rooting out subconscious bigotry, such as categorizing acquaintances by race or creed. Americans need to show, through words and actions, that people must be judged on character, not race or religion. Otherwise, our silence endorses the hatred spewed by these animals. g ' Opinions Page Editor Donald W. ' Meyers column appears Tuesdays and at 4 or Thursdays. His comments that Mr. were published Aug. 8, are nothing more than slanderous untruths. It is for this reason that I respond. Mr. Thomas stated that Steve Heinz was one of four Orem City Councilmen who voted on a motion for me to build on Columbia Lane and that Mr. Heinz did it for his own personal financial interest. Mr. Thomas also stated that "Mr. Heinz' own masonry crew worked on the project he voted to create." This is a slanderous lie. I had a father and son do my masonry and the names were Brailsford. I have never met Steve Heinz. I do not know him and I have never talked to him. He has never set foot on my project. In the 40 years I have worked in this valley, I don't believe Mr. Heinz has ever worked on a project that I have worked on. Mr. Thomas has been excessively angry at my project.
