(AP) Associated Press Writer - suspect FETALUMA, By NiKO PRICE -T- wo girls who were playing a board game with Polly Klaas the night she was abducted from her home have identified the man police call the main suspect in the case, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa reported today. The two seventh-grad- e girls identified Richard Allen Davis as the man who kidnapped the at knifepoint from their slumber party on Oct. 1, unidentified sources told the newspapers. The Press Democrat reported that friends picked Polly's Davis out of a group of photos and a group of men. Another source told the Press Democrat that the girls failed to make a positive identification but that Polly's neighbors said Davis was the man they saw prowling their neighborhood that night. Police in Petaluma refused to comment on the published reports late Thursday. Davis, a parolee with two kidnapping convictions, has not been charged in Polly 's abduction. The Washington Post reported today mat Malval tried to persuade Aristide to add political opponents to his cabinet. The report quoted U.S. officials, who were not identiJean-Bertra- nd fied. The Post also quoted Aristide lawyer Michael Barnes as saying, "No one seriously believes that if he expands or changes the cabinet, the military will just walkaway." Through late November, health officials in three states had reported outbreaks of the Beijing flu, while 14 other states reported sporadic cases. In Europe, outbreaks of the flu strain occurred as early as October in England, Scotland and Finland, the CDC reported. "When the predominant strain is the Beijing, a lot of the population tends to be susceptible," Ms. Arden said. "Things seem to be happening a little bit earlier than usual this season." The flu season typically begins in November, and outbreaks usually don't occur until December or January. By JOAN KIRCHNER Associated Press Writer Americans and ATLANTA Europeans shouldn't wait much longer to get a flu shot as the harsh Beijing flu has arrived early in both places, federal health officials said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that three states and three European countries already are seeing widespread flu outbreaks in heavily populated areas. "There is still an opportunity for people to get vaccinated before they're exposed to the virus," said Nancy Arden, chief of influenza epidemiology for the CDC. "To squander judicial resources unnecessarily to defend a policy courts will not accept makes no sense," spokesman Carl Stern said. He made his remarks after nearly 50 rnembers of Congress wrote to Clinton on Thursday and urged him to prevent the department from changing the porn prosecution policy. "There is no effort to abandon or to stop using the most effective law enforcement tools against pornography," Stern said. "We're going to fake our best shots where we can '' effectively prosecute . ' The proposal before Attorney General Janet Reno would limit multistate prosecutions to specific cases, and even then, they would not be sirriultanccus, Stern said, adding that Reno was close to a decision. Clinton and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, have carefully courted GOP lawmakers as they gear up for the health care battle on Capitol Hill when Congress returns in January. At issue was a memo distributed this week by the National Health Care Campaign, an arm of the DNC that is trying to push Clinton's health care plan. The memo contended that the Republican meetings are merely efforts to attack Clinton's plan. The memo urged supporters to pack the meetings, wear buttons or carry signs and to correct any "misstatements" made by GOP critics of the president's plan. "It is absolutely critical that supporters ... counter misinformation that opponents are likely to spread through these meetings," the memo said. The GOP didn't like the suggestion they would spread ''rruslnfor-mation- ," although an earlier news release announcing the GOP town meetings called Clinton's plan a "bureaucratic nightmare" and said Republicans would use the town meetings to discuss their concerns about it. Michel's letter to Clinton said "it your party to politithese cize events," and noted that anyone, regardless of party, had is unseemly for been invited to attend. V "The Republican Party has never nustooped to such activity in the merous town meetings you have held on this subject," Michel wrote.
