Perhaps 60 percent of Utah's Odocoileus hemionus died in the blizzards of 1984-6but there has been time for a few hardy old buckskins to attain monster size. However, the latter probably constitute less than one percent of the Beehive State mule deer . population. Those monarch muleys, naturally enough, require an extra farther special hunter effort n from roads and trails, plus the rugged equipment and a determination to stay out . longer. Anyone who has hunted for long also realizes there is more at stake here than merely a challenge from the quarry itself. Weather Is sometimes the " most formidable obstacle. 1 Rain and snow Just before the opener cleared by opening muiiui.g, but the damage was done to most roads. Anyone who has driven at night following the opener may also have observed bucks switching ranges. One night after the opener, while driving from Strawberry country to Provo, I observed several racks in Daniels and Provo Canyons moving to the opposite side. It appeared every animal in the forest just wanted to get somewhere else. There is little doubt the deer will be more difficult to find now. In any habitat, they tend to dig in deeper, climb higher, spend more time in the choke-cherr- y and conifer thickets, and well ... you get the picture. Deer will lie low in rain or wind (light snowfall does not seem to bother them) but may throw caution away when finaHy answering their stomachs. Remember that larger racks do not necessarily head downhill with a foot of snow. Hunters near Skyline Drive on the Manti reported many deer in some 16 inches of snow. Of course, when brush and browse can't be reached, and water is permanently frozen over, most muleys will migrate. When getting out, might as well relax and enjoy the communion with nature! It's not every day you can elude the sometimes stressful routine of office or work at home. Look carefully: Is that a bobcat track merging with a snowshoe rabbit track? Are there chickadees and Clark's nutcrackers, or downy woodpeckers about? What has the weather done to the aspens and spruces here on the knoll you're hiking? Whatever happens, no need to come away empty. Then, too, keep at It. You Just might be among the Utahns to tie on a deer tag this year. one-in-thr-ee Perm St. S.Carolina N.lllinoia La. Another nimrod tried a mountain too steep for him and went back to and remained camp for lunch rest of the day. Several hunters in the west end of Duchesne County where I hunted on the - inaugural weekend found they couldn't hit a buckskin when it ' showed way out there. They hadn't practiced with their firing piece on the longer ranges. The list goes on. I observed . one orange-vestcomfortably ' ensconced on a lounge chair at ' his camp who never even noticed a small buck running 30 feet behind him. The hunter was reading a book and didn't even look up. Another licensee I . know hiked up a steep mountain ' to the left when a legal buck watched him go and then trotted over flat ground to the right. There are deer out there.
