Show Wednesday, October - THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 24, 1990 Page B7 Sew a puppet for ill kids seriously - NEW YORK, NY Due to the huge outpouring of public support for the 1989 program to create hand puppets for seriously ill children, "Sew A Smile ... Craft A Puppet" will be continued for a second year. The program was organized through the American Sewing Guild, a national group of sewing enthusiasts. Puppets collected by each participating chapter will be donated to hospitals or charities in the same communities in which they were made. "From children to career women to retirees, people all over the country participated," exclaimed Edie Von Kamecke, National Director of the American Sewing Guild. "We received everything from conventional clowns to avant garde creations, all made from the same pattern. With on the rise and more women sewing today as a creative outlet, the 'Sew A Smile' program is an excellent vehicle to tap into both those trends." Designed for novice sewers, the pattern for the new "Sew A Smile" volun-teeris- puppet has been revised to also appeal to younger children. From September 1 through December 31, free puppet patterns and instructions will be available from all Guild chapters. "Sew A Smile" generated over 14,000 puppets last hand-crafte- d year. The 1990 goal is to collect at least 30,000 puppets. for the "Sew Inspiration A Smile" program comes from The Big Apple Circus, a performing arts organization in New York City. The Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit provides trained performers with clowning skills for regular visits to critically ill children at eight New York hospitals. The clown "doctors" of the Clown Care Unit make more than 50,000 beside visits each year administering the medicine of laughter to young patients and their families. "Sew A Smile" is supported by local sewing and crafts retailers, the American Home Sewing and Craft Association and the Hobby Industries of America.
