Show r Page BIO - Wednesday, October THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 24, 1990 Boutiques blossom in Utah County area Herald Staff Writer Every weekend from through November, there's at least a half a dozen boutiques and craft fairs in Utah Valley. Some are sponsored by groups and held in large halls, others may be just a couple of friends getting together in a private home. At any rate, they present a chance for buyers and sellers to rendezvous. Utah County is a wealth of talent when it comes to homemaking and handicrafts. Many of these craft fairs are on a Christmas theme, although some of the earlier ones also feature Halloween and Thanksgiving ideas. "Every weekend you can go to five or six of these boutiques," said Lou Crandall, Jr. of Mapleton. "Now there are dozens of fair where there were only a handful a few years ago," he said. Crandall and his wife, Lisa, operate the Christmas Fair in Spanish Fork on Thanksgiving weekend. In iL 11th year, the Christmas Fair boasts the largest and longest-runnin- g fair in the state. Last year Detween 20,000 and 30,000 people visited the Utah County Fair Grounds to see the event. "Although 80 percent of our fair mid-Octob- er crafters," said This fall the Christie Brinklev is best described as re laxed, consisting of simple pieces, softened silhouettes and monochro- - Collection "there's something there for the By SHELLY G. NORMAN is rinkley's line for 'women on the go' Crandall, family. We really have a atmosphere." In addition to the typical handmade items, other vendors offer "toys, electronics, clothing items, right down to the smallest of items." Although most of the contributors are from Utah County, said Crandall, people come from all over the intermountain states to sell their wares. "We concentrate on a variety of items," said Crandall. Tracy Fieldsted runs the Country n Christmas Boutique, held in Towne Hall Nov. She has about 40 booths and during the two-da- y show she says a "couple of thousand" people come. "This year I have quite a few people coming down from Salt Lake, usually it's mostly Utah County people," said Fieldsted. Many of the boutiques are free or have token admissions fees. Last year the Country Christmas Boutique charged $.25 at the door, to benefit the Utah County Women's Center, which assists victims of domestic violence. Last weekend at the Palace, Crandall organized an exclusively-craf- t boutique especially for "deer hunt widows" and found 5,000 responsive souls. whole mall-typ- e matic or tonal color combinations. The popcorn stitch is great fun and can be used in many ways. There are many versions of this popular pattern, but let's start by using the following version. When you are instructed to make a popcorn, do this: Work five double crochets in the next stitch; after the last double crochet, pull up the loop on the hook slightly, remove the hook from the loop, insert the hook into the first double crochet made in this group of five and catch the free loop from the fifth double crochet. Pull it through the loop on the hook.
