After UCLA scored 20 first-hapoints, BYU rallied to within three before the Bruins scored the final TD of the game. lf mm head coach TOP PERFORMANCES I 7 27, 17 BYU Cougars Continued from Dl momentum was on the BYU sideline. But UCLA's Bruce Davis hit Hall as he was throwing the ball and Tom Blake recovered for the Bruins. The play was reviewed, but officials chose to confirm the call on the field. "I got hit in the back right as I was throwing it," said Hall, who passed for 391 yards and two touchdowns. "I thought I was in my throwing motion, but the umpire thought otherwise and riiled it a fumble. I felt like I was throwing it." BYU got the ball back with t. 5:53 remaining but went UCLA took over on the BYU 45 and chewed nearly four minutes off the clock. Two penalties on BYU a face mask and a third-dow- n pass interference call kept the UCLA drive going. Chris Markey scored from three yards out with 1:12 to play to clinch the game. "I was really pleased how this team responded when you had to put points on the board at the end of the game," said UCLA coach Karl Dorrell. "We finished the game by icing down the clock and getting seven points. "It was a win today. I knew BYU was a very good football team. You don't win 11 games in a row and not have the attitude and poise it takes to come back." The showdown between BYU and former Cougar quarterback Ben Olson went the Cougars' way. Offensive Line fi 1 y Max Hall caught fire in the third quarter anH rtoarlw loH RVI I tr u vvi i ic victory. He threw for 391 j ruci ill yards and two i IVJ touchdowns, but also had an interception returned for a score and fumbled at a key moment in the fourth quarter. He was sacked four times but got up each time, even joking after the game he was telling the UCLA defensive players to come harder. You love his attitude and it won't be long before you love his game. Hall was under con- stant pressure from players. Why does Fui Vakapuna get nine touches and Harvey Unga just eight? Face it, Fui is not the same player he was last year, at least not yet he doesn't have that burst he showed last year. Harvey should have gotten the ball more. The running game wasn't very effective, only managing 44 net yards. Nice work by Quinn Gooch and Corby Hodgkiss. Gooch had in theUCLA blitz, but what killed the Cou gars was two holding calls and a personal foul against senior center Sete Aulai. He should know better than that. UCLA's Bruce Davis is a man at defensive end and had two seven tackles and Hodgkiss made two stellar plays to break up passes. UCLA wasn't able to break any tackles on short passes, either. 0 0 3 20-1- turnovers. In addition, BYU's average start in the first half was its own line, as opposed to UCLA starting at its own 43. Defensive Line Cornerback Kind of up and down for this group. At ' times they controlled the line of scrimmage and at others, they got pushed back during key moments. Brett Denney has earned more playing time at end and had a sack. Kayle Buchanan got burned for a deep pass in the first half; he just didn't turn around and play the ball. But he came back with an interception. UCLA didn't work the short side much; Ben Criddle only had three tackles. OS n first-ha- lf "The field position, especially in the first half, was very difficult to overcome," BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "When critical plays needed to be made, UCLA made them." Besides the Hall fumble, BYU also lost three other video reviews. In the first half, senior linebacker Bryan Kehl appeared to flip a tipped pass off the ground into the air and Shawn Doman intercepted. But that was ruled an incomplete ossession pass. Also in the first half, Vic So'oto was battling for yard-- , age on a pas play when he fumbled. Replays . ReceiverTight End BYU started going to the tight ends down the field in the second half (often running two tight end sets) and got huge chunks of yardage. Austin Collie looked strong and will get stronger as the season goes on. Tough luck on the Vic So'oto fumble it looked like his knee was down, but the replay couldn't identify where the ball was. Linebacker Coaching Bryan Kehl was all over the field again with 11 tackles. The linebackers com bined, for six tackles for loss and got good pressure on Ben Olson with the blitz package. Chris Bolden got nailed for a pass interference during a critical play in the fourth quarter and was only in on that down because David Nixon needed a rest. ; So'oto's knee clearly hit the turf but were inconclusive on where the ball was C.J. Santiago was a mixed bag again. He averaged a healthy . 42.8 yards on eight punts, but much of that yardage came on fortunate bounces. He actually had two punts longer than 50 yards (with the bounce). Mitch Payne kicked his first field goal and coverage was average at best. 3-- 0 (2-0- twice. But he also came up with a victory. One of the biggest factors in the game was the 11 penalties on BYU including three on senior center Sete Aulai and two sacks and seven tackles. BYU had a hard time stopping him off the corner. Running Back The low grade is actually more for the coaches than for the Safety when the knee went down. UCLA gained possession there. UCLA turned good field position into two more scores in the second quarter and led 20-with 3:28 to play in the first half. BYU put together an drive at the end of the half and Mitch converted a Payne field goal for a 20-score at the intermission. BYU scored on its first drive of the second half. Hall was for 87 yards and flipped a to Austin Collie for the touchdown. After a Kayle Buchanan interception, BYU took two plays to find the end zone again on another hookup. Now the UCLA lead was "We executed better in the second half," Mendenhall said. "We became more precise and we didn't have the destructive penalties in the same volume. You saw bits and pieces of what this team will be." Hall led BYU on a long drive and converted three third downs. A pass to Harvey Unga gave the Cougars the ball at the UCLA 13. But all the momentum was lost on Hall's fumble. The Cougars won most of the statistical battles, outgain-in- g UCLA 435 total yards to 236 and rolling up 23 first downs to UCLA's 15. The Cougars also won the time-o- f battle (31:49 to 28:11) and held UCLA to just , oh third down conversions.
