(APi -Election fraud indictments against eight civil rights activists, including office holders from two Alabama towns, are part ot an ettort to "punish black voters" for supporting Democrats, a lawsuit says. Five of the eight were indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury in Birmingham. The other three were indicted earlier by a grand jury in Mobile. The Southern Poverty Law Center filed its lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in Montgomery against U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese and other officials. It accuses them of pushing the federal investigation that led to the indictments "to punish black voters for their support of candidates of the Democratic Party, to reward whites for their support in elections for national office of candidates of the Republican Party, and to encourage whites to continue their support of such candidates." Arraignment is scheduled tor June 19. The three indicted in Mobile. Albert Turner, his wife Evelyn Turner, and Spencer Hogue Jr.. are scheduled lor trial next week in Selma on 29 counts of voter fraud arising out ot the September primary. Loveland, who faces trial this fall with two dozen others on grand jury indictments alleging a major drug sales operations in the city, has been held in the Ada County Jail since last week in lieu of a second $50,000 bond imposed for two charges of drug possession with intent to sell and a charge of possessing a concealed weapon.
