Now the business world is discovering a hignly lucrative market in the field ot computer repair. Citing a recent study by the U.S. Department of Labor, the publisher of a new national magazine for computer servicers says computer categorepair is the top ry in the nation. Already pegged at $20 billion, the computer servicing industry is expected to swell to $46 billion by 1990, according to a recent study by Arthur Andersen & Co "All the research that we've seen points to significant growth." said Cameron Bishop, publisher of Microservice Management in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Kan But a problem exists for many oi g those trying to break into the business ot computer repair, Bishop said. Rising from the ranks of service technicians, these would-bmanagers often lack essential management know-how- . Microservice Management is intended to bridge that gap. Bishop said. e Computer servicing traditionally has been handled by manufacturers of computer equipment and field engineers, the magazine's editor, Jan Calloway, a former svstems engineer lor IBM, said. those people continue to handle servicing, the flood of new computers and some companies' disinterest in expanding these services has opened up a whole new market for third party'' repair companies. Calloway said. These "third parties." defined by Calloway as servicers who do not manufacture the equip While ment they repair, start out with specialized services, she said. But as their client base grows, third-partservicers see a need to upgrade their education. "The more varied products and brands they can serve, the more advantage they have." she said. According to the Andersen reand port, by 1990 the third-partservices will be responsible for as much as 40 percent of all revenues in the microprocessor servicing market. Bishop said the publication will focus on business management, marketing strategy and techniques. y y dealer-distribut- By NORLEY HALL Springville Correspondent SPRINGVILLE authorphoto - Springville Rell historian Francis has brought his George E.
