Take A Number Darling Fast Moving, Rib - Tickling By NORLEY HALL Springville Correspondent SPRINGVILLE - This is no play for prudes or It is well spiced with natural everyday phrases without being Vulgar or distasteful. The drinking scene portrayed blue-nose- s Spring-ville'- Art City Days have seemingly maintained their 19 year standard of a top performance by the City Playhouse theatrical group again this year. In a fast moving, play entitled "Take A Number Darling" the six person cast literally rolled them in the aisles Tuesday in the opening night of a five presentation schedule. The three-ac- t comedy by Jack Sharkey has been acclaimed as the years top comedy by such prestigious publications as SubLer-ne- r urban Times, Voice Newspapers and others for good reason if the Springville performance of it was any guage of worth. Wind-Radi- Review by Stan Jenkins and Robert Cor-r- y is carried off without offending, but with all the natural grace of two thick tongued lushes struggling to keep their wi'.s while dispending unconscious drunken humor, such as Jenkens tongue twisting line, "you're a fell of a hell swellow." The play is a rapid moving situation comedy staged as tak ing palce in a New York Penthouse. The youthfulness of some of the actors and actresses is deceiving as it is soon apparent they are veterans at acting. The Springville Playhouse group has been turning out plays under professional and experienced theatrical producers lor 35 years. Since the first Art City Days 19 years ago, the Adult production of the group has been an integral part of the celebration. For a real participation in the Art City Days theme of "Sounds of Summer," and for a light hearted G entertaining evenings fun, try "Take A Number, Darling." Besides Tuesdays opening, performances will be held nightly on the 12, 13, 14 and 15 of June in the basement theater of the Springville Civic Center at 50 South and Main. Mountain View High School Cast Will Attend Natl Thespian Confab EFFIE SEEWER Special to the Herald By "A MIDSUMMER'S IN MUN-CIE- " on reads the yellow most of the people surrounding the expanded set on the Mountain View-HigShool stage in Orem. The cast is getting together for its final rehearsals, adding the necessary touches - adapting to the new set and the proscenium setting which is also new to their performance of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". C.L. Frost, the director, is blocking frantically and trying to cap the frustrations of dealing with drama students just out of school, many of whom were graduating seniors. Once the control is established, it's difficult to tell who is more serious about this performance, the director or his cast. There is nervous laughter as a kiss is added; and cheers when the moment succeeds in placing an exclamation point at a place in the script where there was once just a comma. These actors are not preparing for a summer theater - they are not preparing for community thea- dedicated actors are giving up part of their summer to prepare lor their ter., these talented, young to chance, perhaps of a perform before a representative - no, check that Nation-wid- e World-wide audience at the National Thespian Convention at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana during the last week in June. These young men and women life-lim- -- will represent Utah in general, and Orem in particular, when they step onto Muncie's 'Main Stage' on June 28. And it will be largely because of their own efforts. After an appeal to the Orem Chamber of Commerce; a plea to the public of Utah Valley through personal contacts and news articles, MVHS Drama students have had to go it mostly on their own. These young people have sold everything from Hopping Frogs to Bunnies to stationery; they have given up lunches, movies, graduation gilts, etc; and because of their efforts, with a little over 2 weeks left before departure, things look promising. There were some Orem businesses that took it upon themselves to send donations, but the largest contribution came from the Orem McDonalds, who ran a special expressly for the purpose of raising donations for the 'Muncie trip'. This contribution shows, I believe, more that anything else, why McDonalds will survive while other businesses may fail. They not only serve a quality product, but they care about the people who keep them operating "in the black", And don't underestimate the opportunity this invitation presents to our young local actors! This invitation, the only one of its kind ever to have been extended to a secondary school in Utah, to perform imain stage) before over 2000 Thespian representatives from throughout the world, is a feather in the cap of Utah Valley and of Mountain View High School Drama setting a precedent because of the quality of this group of actors, their director, and this production that may never again be attained in the state, let alone locally. This invitation is one in a million! The kind that happens once in a and you can bet that these local, bright, talented young actors are going to make the most of it, even if they have to do it on their own!
