The hard-hittin- g drama about a family that is faced with the government's imminent forced forecloseure of Oscar their farm is a sure-be- t contender. Lange and Shepard 'play a farm couple who manage little more than the barest existence Review on land that has been in the wife's family for generations. In spite of inclement weather, falling crop prices and inconsistent foreign policies on grain exports, they stay on the farm, content with their lot. At the beginning of the film, the main characters are forced conflict into a with a tornado. They survive that, even shrug it off. These are strong, simple people whose roots go deep in their land. It is not until they come face to face with an impersonal government agency that either of them fal- ters. Then it is the husband who stumbles, momentarily losing his way in a sea of and pity. He becomes an abusive drunkard. The wife never even misses a beat, she simply goes on, doing what has to be done to survive and keep her family together. It is her innate strength that becomes the core of the family's unity. Shepard is her husband, Gilbert, a good man who momentarily loses his way. Shepard has been compared to Gary Cooper by other reviewers, and the similarity of manner is indeed striking. He has the same a quiet strength qualities that tinged with vulnerabilty made the legendary Cooper so appealing. Wilford Brimley is wonderful but rough-edge- d as the warm-hearte- d grandfather. As usual, he brings an intense honesty to the role that imparts a sense of stark reality to the whole film. The part of Lange and Shep-ard- 's hardworking teenage son is played sensitively by newcomer Levi L. Knebel. Another unknown, Jim Ostercamp, is touching as a mentally retarded young neighbor. Both of these young men are incredibly effective in their roles, a tribute to the director's skill since neither of them were professional actors before this movie. Country is a powerful movie about the resilience of common people who are faced with extraordinary difficulties. The story is told in an unsophisticated, straightforward manner that is somehow fitting. The music and cinematography are beautiful, and the acting and directing are uniformly superb. One small weakness is a somewhat abrupt ending, but that seems inconsequential in the total context of the production. It is a vital, motivating tale that is masterfully told.
