Show Thursday, October Badgers Gunning mr For Ricks ) The spirit of Ray Billingsley still runs deep in the heart and soul of each member of the Snow College football team and coaching staff. Billingsley, who died tragically from a head injury suffered in a game with Dixie College Oct. u in St. George, was honored in memorial services in Ephraim last week. His teammates have already won a game for him (while he was still alive but in a coma) against the College of Eastern Utah a couple of weekends ago. Now they are going to try to win an Intermountain Collegiate ff Way Stretch Gaitor Bottoms f .MensandLad.es' Von Oil!) O as a memorial to him, starting this weekend in Rexburg, Ida., against Ricks College. To accomplish the feat, the Badgers not only have to beat the Vikings, who have a 0 record in conference play and are now heavy favorites to win the loop crown, but they must defeat Dixie College at home and CEU on the road the following two weekends. Snow is 1 in conference action. And in order for the Badgers to win the league title outright, either the Rebels or the Golden Eagles are going to have to pin a defeat on the nationally-ranke- d Ricks team. The magnitude of the task facing Snow can be appreciated when it is realized that Ricks has already beaten the Badgers, 34-earlier in the season (ICAC football teams play each other twice during the season). The Badgers started the season by losing their first four games but have come back to win their last three contests, starting with 7 a big upset victory over Dixie College down in St. George. In fact, Coach Walt Criner's team seemed to come of age in the Dixie game, both offensively and defensively. In fact, they held g what was then a Rebel team twice inside their line. And the injury to Billingsley seemed to inspire them and they championship 4 X. LZ-- 5C ) J , """CSs?' S T Billy NEWPORT BEACH, i f PrV 1 game. If Snow can cut down on the mistakes they made in their game against the BYU Junior Varsity last Friday (a game they ), won they may have a shot at upsetting the Rexburg team. After all, an inspired team can accomplish great things. As the e nalate Harry Grayson, tionally known sportswriter) once said: "Football isn't a game; it's an emotion." And you can bet the Badgers will be inspired for this game. Then, too, Snow has the added advantage of having played the BYU JV team, which runs the same kind of offense that Ricks does. However, making the assignment facing Snow doubly difficult is that the Badgers defeated the Vikings twice last year, keeping them from winning the conference championship outright and probably knocking them out of the Valley of the Sun Bowl in Phoenix. So Ricks is still smarting from that double loss to Snow and figure they have a score to settle with the Badgers. But sometimes strange things happen when an underdog team becomes dedicated and inspired, especially if it's on a roll. And as a constant reminder of the dedicated mission they face, the Badgers are wearing Billings-ley'- s number on their helmets.
