It's 12th-centu- England. Prince John The country's (McDowall) is a neurotic snit. Even his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Suzman) doesn't like him. She favors her heroic son, Richard the Lionhearted. Unhappily, Richard, King of England, was captured during the Crusades. He is being held hostage by Duke Leopold of Austria. But there's good word. For a 2,000 gold mark ranson, Richard could return to England. And to the throne. That's rotten news for John, who has his eye on the seat. Plotting with his cohorts, Sir Guy and the Sheriff of Nottingham, John elects to come up with the ransom money by raising taxes. But the cash won't go to Duke Leopold. It'll go right in their pockets. The beauteous Lady Marian (Fairchild), betrothed to Richard, has overheard this exchange. And she reveals their plan to Eleanor. Robin Hood (Segal) enters the story. He shows up at John's birthday party dressed as a "singing telegraph" lady. The "telegram" is for John, and it's far from flattering. Furious, t m out to be Morgan Fairchild. Well, for one, Patsy did. In case you need a reminder Fairchild was the gorgeous Constance Weldon Carlyle in Flamingo Road a few seasons back. She's still a knockout in her latest television venture, The Zany Adventures of Robin Hood (Tuesday channel 5), at 8 p.m. on KSL-Tin which she plays Lady Marian. Ask her how the tubby Patsy McClenny came to be the beautiful Morgan Fairchild and she demurs a bit. "Whether or not I succeeded is really a matter of debate. "Whatever you look like isn't going to please everyone," she said. "Some people don't like blondes. Some don't like skinny people. In the press, I've been called 'a pointy-nos- e temptress.' So what you look like isn't going to appeal to everyone." And her looks have bred a fair share of put-down-s. "I've heard people make cracks like, 'Well, if I had had 20 nose jobs' or 'Well, if I had a standby makeup man.' They don't know that whatever I have I achieved through pure discipline. "I'm very disciplined," she continued. "I diet, I take good care of my skin, I never overindulge. I don't smoke, I don't drink and I don't take any drugs. I take care of what God has given me. And I try to make it better." She said that being a looker didn't make her a sure bet for stardom. Or even to get work. "I've put up with a lot of rejection over the years. I remember people telling me I'd never work because of my looks. It's like people being told they'd never John demands to know who sent the message. Told it's from Robin Hood, forever loyal to Richard, John orders Sir Guy and the Sheriff to gather some men and follow the "singing telegraph" lady to Sherwood Forest and find Robin. In the forest, Robin reveals his true identity. Shortly, Sir Guy, the Sheriff and their attending soldiers are cut down to size by Robin and his merry band. Impressed by the victory, Eleanor and Lady Marian decide to seek out the brave and loyal Robin. Dressed as nuns, they venture into Sherwood Forest. Discovering Robin, they learn that he and Richard became fast friends at summer camp. They've remained friends ever since. For a kicker, Robin and Marian immediately fall in love. Robin is told of John's plan. So getting the money for Richard's return will now be his job. How Robin goes about getting it is as goofy as it is successful. She lived for books. Books were her life. And she lived on the fantasies she read about. Whoever would have thought that pudgy Patsy, the little bookworm, would ever turn work because they were too homely. I was told I wouldn't work for the exact opposite rea- son." George Segal is Robin Hood and Morgan Fairchild is his Maid Marian in 'The Zany channel 5. Adventures of Robin Hood' Tuesday at 8 p.m. on KSL-T- Happily, plenty of work was forthcoming. And she couldn't be happier. "So many people," she said, "work at jobs they don't like. I'm so grateful that I'm getting to do what I want with my life. As a little kid. I used to read about great adventures. Now I feel I'm living one." |
