If you don't prepare a bed or container with the correct soil, then you're going to have trouble down the road." She uses finding it absorbs water yet doesn't get soggy. Fertilizer. Use it to nourish the plant because planting mixes often contain no fertilizer. Don't fertilize dry plants; using fertilizer in a weaker solution is often better than applying it too heavily. e fertilizers Pro-Mi- x, Water-solubl- dissolve quickly into a solution and are easy to use. Controlled-releas- e fertilizers make good choices for container gardens. 'Water. The basic rule is that the greater the amount of light hitting the plants, the greater the amount of water needed. Water newly planted things more often and in smaller amounts until the plants start to grow. Once the plants are growing, let the soil dry out slightly between watering. Drying out soil is lighter in color. Don't assume rainfall will dampen the soil; in a container, it could be blocked. When you water, watch for it to run out the bottom of the container. This shows the pot is thoroughly wet and helps wash fertilizer residue out of the soil. Pest control. Don't use antibacterial soap for this.
