SMDER The Daily Herald The Moulin Rouge was an actual place in just outside Paris, at the end of the 19th century. It was a nightclub of legendary proportions, where the Bohemians bohemed till all hours of the night with the cancan dancers, prostitutes and bartenders. If Kurt Cobain had been around then, I can imagine his "Smells Mont-martr- e, Like Teen Spirit" being sung as a paean to nihilistic youthful FILM REVIEW debauchery. Since he wasn't, we have Baz Luhrmann's film "Moulin Rouge" to fill in the blanks, - ), Visually, "Moulin Rouge" THE ANIMAL crack-addle- d animal-orga- MOUUN CONTINUING "Moulin Rouge" looks like it should be a mess, a complete disaster. But it was so carefully orchestrated that it turns out nearly brilliant. The finale is and not just because we know the even- or wearying. But if Baz Luhrmann smoked a lot of weed before' conceiving the film, he apparently shared it with his collaborators, too, as to like it. PG-1- 3 ' for some sexuality and suggestive dialogue; there is no nudity, profanity or violence to speak of B- - DOWN TO EARTH (1 hr., 28 min.; for frequent profanity, some sexual dialogue) Chris Rock plays a would-b- e comedian who is taken to heaven too early and put back in the body of a rich white industrialist. Rock is a funny comedian this movie is 'at its best when he's on stage or mouthing off in daily life but he's not an actor, and he's cerlead. tainly no romantic-comedHigh points include Rock's character's realization that his old material is not funny when it's an old white guy saying it; low points include most of the rest of this mediocre comedy. C THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE fl hr., 18 min.; G with nothing offensive) Ultra-hi- p Disney cartoon about a selfish emperor who is turned into a llama and must change his ways and regain his throne. Very funny and entertaining; also utterly worthless, lacking any sense of timeless-ness- , depth or emotion. Not a classic, but a fun ride. B 15 MINUTES (2 hrs.; R for frequent harsh profanity, abundant graphic violence, some strong sexuality and nudity) Ugly, depraved movie about two European baddies who conspire to videotape their crimes, plead insanity, then make millions telling their story. It's a subject for a dark satire, but this film barely has a sense of humor at all, coming For full reviews of all the films currently ment" at war movie. Two pilots (Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett) vie for the same nurse (Kate Beckinsale) until the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, at which point they go to war. The good half is more good than the bad half is bad, and the overall effect is that you've seen a solid battle movie (especially that attack sequence) with some really stupid stuff beforehand. That stupid stuff cannot be discounted, though, as it is very trite and cliched. B RECESS: SCHOOL'S OUT (1 hr., 24 min.; rated G) Tame, amusing, e animated film about kids saving the world from an evil former principal who wants to do away with summer vacation. Not much for adults, but kids will love it, and adults won't be annoyed by it. Harmless and fun. B- - in an ancient setting with a straight face, this film does it with tongue in cheek. A medieval squire (Heath Ledger) cons his way into a jousting tournament and becomes an underdog success. Modefn sen- sibilities (and musical soundtrack) are mixed with Middle-Age- s events, and the whole thing is innocently enjoyable. A classic .example of being mindlessly entertaining without being stupid. B THE MUMMY RETURNS (2 hrs., 10 min.; PG-1- 3 for some very mild profanity, a lot of intense fighting and other action violence) Hollow sequel to the 1999 hit, with more computer-animated mummies unleashed on the unsuspecting world. It's a bad photocopy of an Indiana Jones movie, with all the action and mayhem but none of the heart, soul or wit. C O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? for hr., 47 min.; PG-1- 3 fl moderate profanity, comic violence, animal cruelty) The Coen Brothers return to their "Raising Arizona" roots with this daft comedy about three escaped convicts in 1930s Mississippi. George Clooney is espelead cially fine in the role, but every character is odd, and the film is full of intelligent, witty, highly quotable dialogue. A PEARL HARBOR (3 hrs., 3 min.; PG-1- 3 for abundant war violence some hospital (mostly blood, scattered profanity) Half cheesy romance, half spectacular "!,. I I.. THE SHREK FREE hr., for heavy profanity, y mild sexuality, some violence) drama about a ballet dancer (Julia Stiles) who moves to an urban wasteland after her mother dies and must adapt to an entirely new climate. About half the film is typical Hollywood pablum; the other half is actually rather realistic and intelligent. Julia Stiles is too stand-offisbut the supporting cast of mostly unknowns is appealing. C SHREK (1 hr., 29 min; PG for a lot of crude jokes and some very -- mild profanity) Wickedly funny satire of fairy tales, and the Disney versions of them specifically. An ogre must rescue a princess and turn her over to an evil ruler, in exchange for getting his private swampland back. Subtle and fairy tale jokes abound, but the story often goes in illogical directions just because of the jokes available there. The toilet humor gets old, too. "Parallel" themes about her reconciling with her family and him accepting his own past do not work well together, and the whole thing is too moody for its own good. Though Luhrmann (who the film with Craig Pearce) could be faulted for not writing his own music, he should be applauded for finding existing songs that fit his film as perfectly as if they'd been written for it. (The Police's "Roxanne" is the perfect background number for Christian's dilemma with Satine, it turns out.) In one extraordinary scene, Christian woos Satine by quoting, in rapid succession, several different love songs. It's almost funny, in fact, except that he's so sincere about it. It's impossible to describe the audiovisual delights of this movie. One early scene, in which Christian meets up with Toulouse Lautrec (John Leguizamo) and his cronies, is shot like an animated cartoon, complete with sound effects. Other moments are beautiful and poignant. You almost take the whole thing completely seriously, and then Zidler and a bunch of chorus boys break out into an elaborate rendition of "Like a Virgin." Ewan McGregor, surprisingly enough, has a great singing voice. It's resonant and rich, and it helps make charhis innocent, acter extremely sympathetic Nicole Kidman's voice is nothing great, but her acting is, as usual, shrilly effective: You feel for her without totally liking her. 2 hrs.; for crude while simultaneously being late enough to keep reviews out of Friday's papers.. "Moulin Rouge" is a love story a rather simple one, really, dressed up to appear grandly operatic, which it does'. At that outset, we meet our narrator and protagonist, Christian (E wan McGregor), a poet who informs us that what we're about to see happened one year earlier, and that the woman he loved is now dead. So much for the possibility of a happy ending. The corpse in question is Satine (Nicole Kidman), the Moulin Rouge's lead chanteuse and courtesan (read: singer and prostitute). She wants to be an actress, and the club's owner, Zidler (Jim Broad-bentwants to convert the Moulin Rouge into a legitimate theater provided he can get financial support from a wealthy Duke (Richard Roxburgh.). The Duke is more than willing to lend a hand on the condition that he be given exclusive uh, rights, to Satine. The only problem with that is Satine's love for Christian, who is writing the musical that will be the renovated Moulin Rouge's debut production.
