(NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN Death of Chad Leaves Unanswered Many Questions on Laetrile's Use on Cancer - BOSTON (UPI) The death last week of Chad Green taking Laetrile while suffering from leukemia, leaves many unanswered questions about whether the unproven cancer treatment is a miracle cure or a quack remedy. The National Cancer Institute nearly one year ago applied for a license to conduct clinical studies of Laetrile. But so far the Food and Drug Administration has not decided if it will grant the request. A decision now would come amid heightened public interest created by the Green case as well as a newly released report on Laetrile's toxic ef- to spokesman Wayne case records Pines. Pines said the FDA has never approved a chemical for testing in human beings unless special animal tests indicated the drug had some anticancer activity and, he noted, "There never have been any documented cases of Laetrile having altered the course of cancer." FDA's final decision, Pines said, probably will not be affected by the Green case. of cancer patients who had taken Laetrile and no other form of cancer therapy. Six patients showed improvement, although it was not certain they improved because of the Laetrile. "Because widespread public use and interest" in Laetrile, an NCI spokeswoman said, the Institute requested a clinical trial in which the drug would be given to cancer patients who exhausted all other "There have been forms of treatment. NCI last year reviewed human beings, according Filling of Cabinet exWASHINGTON Cabinet soon, according pected to fill to a White House aide. "We're working on it," said deputy press secretary Rex Granum Wednesday. There appeared to be no immediate rush, however, to name a secretary for the new Department of Education. Carter signed legislation Wednesday creating the Cabinet post which was a key part of his government reorganization plan. Also, Commerce Secretary Juanita Kreps will leave the Cabinet Nov.l, and it was expected Undersecretary Luther Hodges Jr. will take over as acting secretary until a replacement is found. Hodges is said to be in the running for the top job. Granum said both appointments would be decided in the "relatively near future." The president scheduled a series of meetings with White House aides today and later planned to drop in on a White House reception honoring the Alliance to Save Energy, headed by Sens. Alan Cranston, and Charles E. Percy, l. Carter traveled Wednesday night to Baltimore to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Orioles to win the World Series. On the political front, it was learned Carter has added Houston, Tex. to the stops he will make on a four-da- y whirlwind campaign tour following the formal announcement of his candidacy Dec. 4. The other cities on Carter's cross country swing include New York, Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles. The president, meanwhile, continues a lively travel schedule. On Saturday he will attend the dedication of the John F. Kennedy presidential library in Dorchester, Mass.. with potential rival Sen. Edward also on the speaker's platform. Kennedy, The ceremony has aroused interest since the two e men will have their first confrontation since Kennedy began sending up smoke signals that he will challenge Carter's Carter plans to tour the library and participate in the program which is expected to last more than an hour with the late president's children. Caroline and John F. Kennedy Jr., also scheduled to speak. There appeared to be some disappointment in the White House that Carter, who was one of the candidates, did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He sent a congratulatory message to Mother Teresa of Calcutta praising her work on behalf of the poor and the example she provided "of selfless concern for others." R-Il- face-to-fac- Better Things Seen For Education Unit - WASHINGTON (UPI) President Carter believes the new Department of Education can do six things better than the old Office of Education. First, Carter said the newest federal department can direct the nation's attention to education: "Instead of being buried in a $200 billion-a-yea- r bureaucracy, education issues will receive the top-lev- priority they deserve," he said. Second, he said federal education programs will be more accountable, answering to a single secretary. Third, the administration of programs will be streamlined Carter said, because the Health, Education and Welfare bureaucracy will now be exwhere education had been handled cluded from the decision-makinprocess. Fourth, the department will save tax dollars by eliminating layers of decision-making- . Fifth, education programs will be more responsive now they are part of their own department. Sixth, local communities will be guaranteed control of their schools and education programs. The last point was the major thrust of Carter's remarks. :4 u I Posts Likely Soon (UPI) - President Carter is two vacancies g of "This patient had cancer cells.
