Utah Thursday was seeking the extradition of Christopher Ascarte of Fountain Valley, Calif., for masterminding Wednesday's airplane abduction of the small child from Beaver. California, meanwhile, was pursuing the extradition of the mother, Lauri Kessler, for snatching young Christopher from the arms of his aunt at an Orange County supermarket in August. he with Both parents are charged with felonies "custodial interference" in Utah and she with "child stealing" in California. "What we have here is an ugly dilemma," said Orange County, Calif., Deputy District Attorney Robert Molko in a telephone interview. "Both may be liable for different offenses involving the same child." "Obviously it's an example of frustration or dissatisfaction by both parents with what happend in the courts," he said. "They took the law into their own hands." The father is accused of setting up the precisionlike abduction cf the child from this small southern Utah town. Authorities said two men grabbed the boy from his mother in front of the Beaver post office and hustled him off to the local airport in a rented van. With Beaver Cily Police in pursuit, the men and child boarded a single-enginrented plane which the father had waiting at the airport. One police officer tried unsuccessfully to block the takeoff by ramming the tail of the aircraft. Police later traced the plane back to California and determined that the child was with Ascarte. But Molko said California authorities had no plans to arrest the father until the facts in the case could be evaluated further. He said Ascarte had a custody order for the child from an Oregon court. He also said the Utah Governor's Office was considering an extradition request for Mrs. Kessler for violation of California's "child stealing" laws. He said the woman, assisted by a man, confronted Ascarte's sister in a supermarket and "used force" to take the boy away. Beaver County Attorney John Christiansen, Doctor Corrects Lung Cancer Report - doctor who said earlier this week that Durango's cancer rate might be four times the national average says there is no hard evidence to prove his point, and he would like a study of the situation. Dr. Scott McCaffrey told a citizens' group Monday that an inspection of records at Mercy Medical Center showed 237 cases of lung cancer had been diagnosed there in the past 15 years. He said a city of Durango's size would be expected to have only 60 cases of lung cancer during that period. A hospital official Wednesday said McCaffrey had misinterpreted the statistics. He said the 237 figure was the total number of cancer treatments performed at Mercy, not the number of cases diagnosed. McCaffrey Thursday . admitted he had misinterpreted the figure. And he said his original claim of a cancer rate four times the national average had been only speculation. "I placed a lot of qualifiers around my original statement," McCaffrey said. "I said the data from kind Mercy was very raw and did not represent any of the other said I records the also e of study. hospital in Durango had not been studied, and lived in questioned whether all of the cancer patients now that we can say no is There way right Durango. there has been an increase in the incidence of cancer DURANGO, Colo.
