Cojper, professor of neurosurgery at New York University Medical School, began experimenting with portions of the human brain and corresponding parts of the body that they regulated. In a landmark medical discovery, Dr. Cooper invented a procedure he called cryothalamectomy, the freezing and isolation of malfunctioning brain tissue, and a correlative operation called cryosurgery, which alleviates tremors of that part of the body controlled by the affected area of the brain. An example of Dr. Cooper's procedure is shown in "The Body Human: The Vital Connection," a dramatic information special to be broadcast Thursday at 7 p.m. on Channel 5. After she regained consciousness, it was discovered that, because of the damage suffered to her brain, she had developed a violent tremor in her left arm which prevented her from leading a normal life. Dr. Cooper removed the damaged brain tissue while Carol was fully awake. Because of Dr. Cooper's discovery, sufferers of such diverse afflictions as dystonia, chorea, and the tremor and rigidity of Parkinson's Disease have been given new hope. And, because of the great numbers of people who can be helped with his procedure, the Center for Physiological Neurosurgery at the Westchester County (N.Y.) Medical Center has been established, under Dr. Cooper's supervision. - MGM will film "Brass HOLLYWOOD (UPI) the controversial suspense drama that Target," on the incision! The tremor is relieved by destroying the portion of the thalamus which governs that particular part of the body that is afflicted. During the entire operation, it is imperative that the patient remain awake and coherent so he can respond to the surgeon's directives and so that the surgeon can monitor the dissolution of the tremor.
