To understand how this happens, we have to understand how things float. Something floats in a liquid, or fluid, because the fluid holds it up. The fluid actually offsets the force of gravity, which pulls everything to the center of the earth. This upward push on a floating object is called "buoyant force," or simply "buoyancy." This force acts on every object that is in a fluid, including objects that cannot float. For example, a stone feels lighter in your hand underwater than when you hold it in the Reg. to 7.00 3" Reg. to 12.50 5" air. By Frank Hill SHORT RIBS I WHAT WAVE FLOWN MILES TD ASK YOU 3,000 ONE The buoyant force of a fluid is not always strong enough to lift a solid body. It is not the weight of the body that decides this. For example, a smail stone sinks, but a piece of balsa wood floats. Whether a body will sink or float depends on its denisty. HOW MAY , IF d Denisty depends on weight and size. If two bodies have the same weight, the smaller one is the denser body. Fluids also have density. When a solid body is placed in a fluid, it pushes some of the fluid aside. If the solid is more dense than the fluid, it weighs more than the fluid it pushes aside, and it will sink. If the solid is less dense than the fluid, it will float. Now we come to the metal boat. A ship is actually a metal shell and contains large quantities of air. The ship as a whole, with air inside, is less dense than water. It weighs less than the water it pushes aside. That is why it g.iMJHj I.M. Rao, Bv Tnited I'ress International Todav is Mondav.
